It's time for VH March Madness...

I always wondered what VH Linkers thought was the ultimate Van Halen song. So let's find out.

I have put together a single elimination, bracket style tournament pitting one song against each other. The last one standing will be the VH Links favorite Van Halen song.

VH has 133 studio recorded songs; I did not include the B-side Crossing Over, That's Why I Love Ya, or the live takes on I Can't Drive 55, One Way to Rock, or Won't Get Fooled Again.

To get this to 128 songs, I arbitrarily dropped song intros Intruder and Primary, and dropped the instrumentals Strung Out and Doin' Time. In addition, Little Guitars (Intro) is considered part of Little Guitars for this tournament.

I made 8 divisions; named after the seven members of Van Halen and the 8th was named after Ted Templeman. (Were you expecting a Mitch Malloy division? LOL)

I made 8 #1 seeds, and these are the eight songs according to Setlist.fm that they have played most often live: Runnin' With the Devil, You Really Got Me, Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love, Jamie's Cryin' (a surprise, I might add), Dance the Night Away, Unchained, Jump, and Panama. I pitted them against what I would consider the #16 seeds (instrumentals or album fillers): Tora! Tora!, Sunday Afternoon in the Park, 1984, Inside, A Apolitical Blues, Baluchiterium, Neworld, and, ahem, How Many Say I.

The remainder of the matchups are completely random and were tabulated by a random number generator.

I will post the #1 vs 16 matchups today, and every 24 hours, I will put up the next match.

In 2016, Unchained defeated Mean Street in the finals by the score of 24-17.

In 2018, Unchained was removed from the tournament. Romeo Delight defeated Mean Street in the finals by the score of 20-19 when a poster named tankman from Yorkshire, England cast the deciding vote.

Appreciate that it was done before. Will keep at it unless the interest is low. It's not like we have new VH to listen to in these difficult times! Not like something was released from the Vault to keep us entertained while quarantined!

Why don't you list all of the matchups in one post? That would make it much easier for people to vote by simply highlighting their choices. Also, if you do them one match up at a time in 8 different brackets, it will take a month of Sundays to get through the tournament.

Just some food for thought.

Don't you hate it when someone tries to do something you already know how to do so well... but with mixed results.
