Default You're No Good - Linda Ronstadt arrangement

Just listened to the amazing Linda Ronstadt arrangement.
    Great guitar and vocal arrangements.

This is one of the few VH cover recordings which doesn't quite work for me.

So many dynamic avenues to explore on the original version which largely go ignored:

The little guitar bridge (EVH's take could have been stellar) ... the al cappella section ... the break down ending.

The potential was certainly there to be a great cover... but imho doesn't quite make the mark.

The omissions remind me of VH completely overlooking the bridge section of Pretty Woman.

I dare say this recording brings the VH II album down a bit for me.

    Your thoughts?

    Cheers,

I dig Linda Ronstadt’s version, which is a cover itself. I love VH’s version. The guitar, bass, drums, lead and back up vocals are grade A classic Van Halen. IMO, VH II is the most underrated album in the VH catalog. It’s nails, start to finish.

Sorry, completely disagree. Now I do like Linda's version, but VH's YNG is my favorite studio cover by the band. Beginning with the great and eerie "whale calling" bass intro by Mike, then Al comes in on his Octobans, the first time on a studio recording we get to hear him play those. Then Ed with such a warm classic brown sound tone, and one of his finest solos ever with another new(at the time) tapping run and the first time we get to hear his palm scrape harmonic technique which he does again later on SGMAD. Last but not least the call and response screams and squeals between Dave and Ed is among the best that any singer/guitarist duo ever laid down on tape.

Man, what's not to love, and personally I've never understood the bashing this tune often gets. But, then again, I'll never understand the absolute trashing most people give Loss Of Control, either.

I liked the Ronstadt version, but musically it's kindergarten compared to the mighty VH.

The OP is entitled to his opinion.

    I think its it's wrong.

The part he's talking about that was omitted doesn't fit in a hard rock arrangement.
The only genre I really know is Van Halen.

Al's Vistalite Octobans sounded so amazing on that tour. The fill he does on them at 1:12 is perfect and so much better than what he does on the album there.

And so much for Dave never being a good live singer.

Ed's tone on this tour may very well have been his best live tone ever.

I love both versions, def my fave Ronstadt tune.

I think Waddy Wachtel played guitar on that, and the moody part is extremely cool.

But i think VH was brilliant in sort of "Heavy Metalizing" this kind of dark tune,
and taking the basic elements/riff idea, and transforming into something the kids
    could grab onto.

You don't wanna be overly clever in the arrangement, you wanna keep it primal.

But, yes, the Ronstadt tune has a few more twists that you noted, and i love them,
but think they would only work in the more commercial/radio context.

Love both versions, but it never should have been the opening track on VHII. SGMAD or LUTS should have smashed our faces in first.

I agree. SGMAD and LUTS are my two favorite songs on VH II and either one would have made a great opener.

That video's awesome. I love VH's version of that song. I think they did it great justice.

Very cool and different approaches by both bands.

    Linda's is awesome too.

Nah, it's a miss. VH 2 is pretty much VH1 leftovers and demos, topped with a buzzsaw mix as well. You're not gonna find many fans around here that don't love this record, but I'm one of 'em. Diver is a much more brown sound album than VH2. YNG is the weakest track by a country mile.

Except for LITS, DOA, and BU, which are true blue VH.

But a GOOD tour. Actually, when it comes to Dave Halen, the first 3 tours are from all evidence to date, the best tours.
