At the very least, it seems we're doing a better job of managing the hospitalizations and deaths. Hopefully that remains. Our hospitalizations are going up steadily, but the average hospital stay isn't as long as it was in April/May. And doctors seem to have a better understanding, though still not complete, of the virus and various treatments.

But, yes, it's going to be a long ass winter, regardless.

Yup. I know that up here that numbers spiked a couple of weeks after thanksgiving. I fear what the US numbers are gonna look like in the middle of December. I think we'll be well into next year before we see things getting any better.

The good thing is that the mortality rate for it seems to be really going down.

    Hopefully that continues.

it certainly is good news. This thing is this is still going wipe out a lot more people just due to the case counts. I think society in general just has to realize that's the case and act accordingly. We need to try to limit cases as much as possible until we have a vaccine (which will be a long time still) without crippling the economy. That means being responsible which too many people just aren't good at.

I imagine there will be more houses this year leaving their front light off and not taking part in Halloween.

No tourists and even interstate borders are still shut to some states.

Returning citizens and international essentials are quarantined for 2 weeks and tested twice.

This strategy seems 100% reliant on a vaccine becoming available.

When I was a kid, all mom and dad had to worry about was needles and pins in the candy. Today you have to worry about the candy coming home coated in a global pandemic. Times were so much simpler back in the day.

There are still some who believe that the goal is a herd immunity until we can get widespread vaccines, but a Russian doctor used himself as a guinea pig to see how the antibodies protected recovered patients and he found that after 3 months he had much reduced protection and after 6 months not only did he have no protection but the second case he got was much worse than the first and required hospitalization. I hope that we don't find that vaccines need multiple boosters, because that would be a terrible logistic problem with many more doses needed and many more facilities ad workers. Plus anti vaxxers who may submit to one vaccine will not submit to multiples and may actually use the lessened effectiveness of the vaccine to push their agenda

It seems like doctors are approaching the disease much more aggressively in early stages and trying to keep people off ventilators. They've come to an understanding of "happy hypoxia" and that some patients whom you would just automatically put on a ventilator do better on high dose oxygen therapy. Rural patients are going to be the most affected. Those small hospitals just do not have the resources in both equipment and trained personnel so I worry for them.

I think we will see a spike after Halloween, then a bigger spike after Thanksgiving and a huge spike after Christmas. I am stuck with babysitting 2 boys every other weeks ( sort of grandkids) They stay overnight at my house while their father works a night shift. Neither are in school because their mother is so worried that they'll get infected in school. But she is not nearly as vigilant in casual settings and over the summer they have gone to pool parties, family gatherings, and now they have gone to Halloween events and at one point there was a backyard BBQ of about 30 people. I expect the holidays are going to be business as usual for them.

My boy takes them to restaurants where they eat inside and shopping.

I'm pretty sure if I get this I will get it from them. So I require them to sanitize their hands as soon as they come in the door and then they go to their room where I have a TV and snacks and everything they need before bedtime. Their room has it's own bath, but I still I think that after the holidays hit, they are going to be germ factories.

I have already announced that I will not be having guests for either holiday. It's going to be me and my tofurkey all by my lonesome. I have no problem with that.

If immunity only lasts months then 2 things are true. (1) we are fucked and (2) whoever hits on a vaccine has hit the motherload.

The number of documented reinfections is in the single digits, though, isn't it? I seem to remember the whole 3 months of immunity thing was a misreading of what the CDC said.
