HAPPY 65th BIRTHDAY to EDDIE VAN HALEN! You influenced generations of guitarists and although many have come after you, no one can take your place. Stay strong, be well as we await your next move. ALL HAIL KING EDWARD!

Happy Birthday to King Edward, the Czar of Rock & Roll Guitar and the real G.O.A.T. Ever since I first heard your amazing talent back in 1978, you have always been The One. Often imitated, never duplicated …

    From Nuno Bettencourt's FB page:

Happy bday to KING EDWARD the first ... and the last of his kind.
Just when you thought that the still Iconic, Chuck Berry, Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Brian May and Tony Iomi, had sealed the fate and history of Rock Guitar, along came an Eruption that would shake our Six String universe to its core and change Rock Guitar forever.
From the first time in ‘78’ when we first dropped that needle and tilted our heads to what sounded like an approaching car horn that then harshly disappears into a few pulsating distorted bass notes... at that point how could any of us know that that one innocent tickling of the ivory’s was a final warning to Earth and all surrounding planets and galaxy’s , that there’s no turning back. That in a few milliseconds the first blistering, never before imaginable guitar sound and riff, Running with the Devil, will explode through our stereos and wherever we were at that moment we knew that the Van Halen spaceship had landed and heard impossibilities we never knew a Guitar could do.
Rock and Roll guitar as we knew it, would never be the same, ever, again.
And while that first track was blowing are minds, we still had no idea that our minds would be blown even further with was coming next. song after song, Solo after solo.
And what’s fucking crazy, playing any Van Halen track now, 40 years later, still has the same jaw dropping affect. not because of nostalgia. But because it IS that fucking good. still dirty, full of fire, attitude, passion and a big Fuck You that still stands the test of time.
And what’s crazier, they were throwing a party on those albums while somehow musically, intellectually, technically and effortlessly kicking our asses, album after album.
I love and respect my guitar heroes that came before Eddie as they were integral to Eddie as in creating the Frankenstein monster that is Van Halen.
But, to me, since Eddie , while there are incredible players I love and am influenced by, NO ONE has terrorized a guitar like Eddie.
Yeah, They got faster, cleaner . More difficult to play.
But they never sounded as Dangerous. While their’s are amazing notes, his is untamed DNA, directly from heart to hand.

"One of the reasons I left Sabbath was because Van Halen was blowing us off the stage every night. It was embarrassing." -Ozzy Osbourne

"When I first heard "Runnin' With The Devil" on the radio, I was stunned and found myself dizzy, walking through my high school hallways thinking, "What was THAT?!"
Eddie Van Halen was so innovative and kicked so much ass, and David Lee Roth was for a time indisputably the Greatest Man in America.
If aliens came down and challenged us to a Battle of the Bands to decide the fate of Planet Earth, I would feel very confident putting early Van Halen forward as our champion." -Tom Morello

"A lot of bands mature, which means they get square; they start delivering messages. Hey, you got a message, use Western Union." -DLR
