Yeah, most new bands I get into these days are via word of mouth mostly via forums like this here.

I also agree with the sentiment that bands that have popped up as the next big thing the past decade or so showed a lot of promise and quickly burned out for one reason or another. Probably the only band I got into in the last 15 years that's still doing anything is Muse and honestly they seemed to have run out of gas on their last couple albums. This band, Savages was the last band I thought had real promise and showed a bit of originality and they haven't done anything since their 2nd album almost 5 years ago:

A cover of a song that was popular in recent years would get airplay. Or an older song with a hook like what Rivers Cuomo did with Africa (tho that was lame).

I mean, YRGM was their first release, Pretty Woman was their biggest hit for a while... I thought they should have come back with another awesome cover for ADKOT because that's part of their history too. Screw it, do it now and make it the first release. The hard part is picking the song, but I do believe that's the one path they have towards airplay and a mild resurgence to the masses who forgot they exist.

A band that showed promise IMO was The Sixxis from the Atlanta area (Dunwoody) that I saw twice as opener for The Winery Dogs and Spocks Beard:

But they also vanished after their second album.

The various bands mentioned above, Black Coffee/South of Eden, Dirty Honey, etc., all sound pretty cool. BUT: they all remind us of other bands (Aerosmith - Black Coffee, e.g.). Guess that isn't enough to bring them out into a broader audience?

Greta van Fleet was a nice Led Zep cover band. But that is like one-trick-pony. To be fair: only listened to one of their albums, so I might be just pushing them into a musical drawer which I closed.

She's the Woman is a better lead. But songs like As Is and YAYB's shoulda got play. It was just STW and Tattoo. The best songs never got played. Promotion nightmare. Ignoring the better songs on the tour was just as worse.

Yep. If they wanted to try and get some play with a catchy tune, then B&F or YAYB were the ones. Or if they wanted to just say "fuck it, we are Van Halen, we are back, and we STILL kick ass" then As Is wouldve been a great nod to the hardcore fanbase.

LOL. Exactly. I don't see what was so hard about it. Like you've done for every previous record.
Those songs are a better representation of the record.

I thought Blood and Fire would've been a good one to release first. Especially with Dave saying "Told ya I was comin' back."

I agree. Just listened to it again and it would have been very appropriate. Although I still like "Tattoo" and never quite understood the vitriol it got upon release. I always thought it was a fun song...YMMV.

Tattoo has a nice groove and good vocals and solo but I'm just not a fan of the chorus.

Yes, but it is fairly easy to see why Eddie wouldn’t want to highlight that line especially in a single. .

I would have gone with She's The Woman too. Its got that classic Van Halen sound that everyone had been wanting to hear. Blood and Fire is alright I guess, but I hate all those, "We came! We came! We came!" parts in the chorus. I like that one more as the Ripley instrumental.

I love Dave's reflective lyrics on Blood And Fire, it has probably my favorite solo on the entire album, and those big Who-like power cords at the end of the solo with those great monster fills by Alex is one of the best moments on the album.

I do think Ed's tone on the Ripley guitar was more shimmery and ethereal on the original instrumental, but oh well, I still love both tracks.

Blood & Fire is a great tune for all the reasons mentioned here. But if I may make one criticism, and this goes back to the Ripley version too, is in the beginning when Al's drums come in. It sounds a bit "off" to me. I think it would have been better with a little in-rhythm high-hat or something else, until the drums really kick in and the song gets "bigger." Anyone else feel that way about it?
