I didn't like that song when it was released. it always sounded forced to me which this article confirms.

I actually like it more now.

I think they took parts of Sammy's unofficial chapter 19 and 20 that never made it to his book to make this article. Those two chapters leaked out a long time ago and it's an eye opening read to say the least.

I remember back in 1996 (I think it was shortly after the failed reunion with DLR) where Dave said something about how Sammy and he had gone through the same hazing ritual with the VH brothers.

I actually like "But I want to show you what love can do" a little better. Interesting, I always wondered how the "don't tell me" related to Cobain. Makes sense now.

Don't Tell Me and Crossing Over are really the only two songs from that album that I really like. I honestly think if true, Eddie's push to make the lyrics "dark" and cynical was the right choice and make the song better, certainly more interesting especially in context with the music which isn't the usual poppy keyboard based pap typical of most of the Hagar era love song shit.

I guess a number of tunes on Balance weren't so contrived after all. The darkness of Fair Warning somehow produced much better songs, though.

Uncalled for, with a dash of weak sauce. Kudos. Two different albums, two different front men, in different decades, with different versions of Eddie - the primary songwriter, musically.

I've always loved Don't Tell Me on its own merits.
Never once, not once, did I/do I equate it with that grunge shotgun blast victim.

I also don't think of punk rock when I hear ATBL.

I always dug Don't Tell Me, specifically bc of the guitar playing. I think if Sam had gotten his way on the lyrics, we would have been subjected to a few more poetic felonies, like UFB. YMMV

I was gonna read the article, but then I thought: "I dig the song, I don't need to know the bullshit that went on behind it."
