I almost think I'd rather see the soundcheck than the actual show.

Gotta give it to Wolf, he hits all the notes like a laser. The only thing making me prefer the previous guy is sentimentality.

When I first heard the background vox on YAYB, and also DTNA on the tours since (including the ill fated Tokyo Dome cd), I thought "Whoa... It's not Mike, but it's still pretty freakin' good!" Image/stage presence/nostalgia aside, Wolfgang really delivered IMO.

Is that Wolf doing the lead vox on I'll Wait? Or is it whoever is playing keyboards?

He hits the notes, and did a good job. But it's nothing like the MA tone. I mean you could have a professional female back-up singer who would hit all the MA notes effortlessly. But it would sound nothing like Van Halen. The Van Halen vocal sound is MA. MA+SH = sounds like Van Hagar. And I promise you that if Dave somehow convinces Mike to join him in Vegas, when you'll hear the choruses, it'll sound like CVH.

No the VH sound is MA + Eddie plus either Dave or Sammy. Mike gets all the credit for background vocals but The Circle doesn't sound like VH either with backgrounds. Neither does CF because Eddie is also a key ingredient. Somebody is singing that freaking 3rd in those harmonies

Anyway I wonder why Wolfgang would be there at soundcheck if they are piping in vocals and bass?

Was interesting to hear them get lost at the end of Drop Dead Legs. For mine Ed comes in early which puts Al off by quarter note, you can hear Al try to fix it a couple of times but it gets messy, I think at some point they give up

I read somewhere a long time ago that Steve Lukather was a secret uncredited background vocalist on all the albums with Sammy. I think it might've been an old interview with Lukather.

He did. And Ted Templeman did as well.

At least according to Ted's recollections of the recording of VH I as told by Greg Renoff in VH Rising.

There's also a picture in the sleeve of the FUCK album cover that shows Ed, Mike, Sam, and Al around a microphone belting their ass off so I'm assuming that this is the case and Al has indeed sang backup on some Van Halen studio material.

    EDIT:
