Many trump voters in my view are refugees of the ever increasing tribalism in both our politics and media. So Trump for many was the rejection of all that more so than wow what a great guy. So now as tribalism as only increased accepting anything that is from what they were escaping from is rejected. It is in many ways a rejection more so than acceptance for many.
The mistake is too many dismiss as racist, stupid etc.... and fail to appreciate the dynamic that produced trump to begin with. It is why I feel Trump is a symptom of tribalism and those that dismiss and label him as the problem only reinforce why so many rejected traditional candidates to begin with. Once you appreciate what is rejected the double down as you say is totally rational even if you disagree with it.
