Default eBay and Discogs Tax Fees Now Live

Got a pretty big shock when I bought a pricey piece of used audio gear ($1000) and went to pay and say a nearly $90 added "tax" in the final Paypal step of paying. No mention of a tax on the auction, the seller wasn't even aware this was going on. This is also happening as of today on Discogs - you go to pay for records, and you get an additional charge depending on what state you and the seller live (it can easily get complicated) which is added on right next to the shipping fee.

Long story short, basically anything you buy on eBay and Discogs, be prepared to pay upwards of 10% tax on the final price *before* you hit that *BUY* buttom.

    What bullshit.

If I sell you something through a newspaper ad there's not tax on it.

How is this any different except for the fact that they can easily track it?

Many eBay sellers actually operate out of an actual brick and mortar store, where items (even used) are subject to sales tax. Most listings mention this, although obviously varies from state to state. I buy a lot of stuff from eBay sellers in the US, yet being in Canada, I get around the taxes. Depending on the size/value of the items, I do sometimes have to pay a Canadian Customs fee...
