Default Weezer’s new album is called Van Weezer, and it’s “all guitars and shredding”

If you hadn’t seen Weezer live, you might not be aware that Rivers Cuomo is a full-on ’80s shred god in Buddy Holly clothing, but that’s all about to change if the band’s new album is anything to go by.

Entitled Van Weezer, the new full-length is set to be stuffed to the gills with electric guitar and shredding, as the frontman revealed to Zane Lowe on Apple Music’s Beats 1 while unveiling new single The End Of The Game - which reportedly features 100 guitar overdubs.

“Last album we didn't have any guitars, this one is just all guitars. A hundred guitars,” says Cuomo.

Rivers Cuomo stating he busts out some "Yngwie Malmsteen shit". I'll be the judge of that. The song I just listened to had some rudimentary tapping, hardly what I would call "shredding". I hope it's not all tongue in cheek Steel Panther type bullshit. I'm really sick of everybody making fun of 80s music.

Funny that Weezer along with Green Day and Fall Out Boy are doing a show tonight in Hollywood at the Whiskey. Apparently, Van Halen still influences bands, especially shitty ones.

Rivers is a big Van Halen fan. He was on a guitar mag cover with one of Ed’s guitars that went for sale in the auction for America after 9/11.

The Weezer logo is also an homage to Van Halen’s logo.

On the 2nd listen of my 2nd Winery Dogs cd. Richie Kotzen is a shredder!!! A lot of folks know he was in Poison for a while. Let that sink in... It was a gig for $$ and exposure to a bigger audience. Same as blues guys like Sambora or Mars, in Jovi and the Crue, etc.

Not saying that the Weezer guy is a shredder, as I honestly don't know, yet perhaps don't judge a book by it's cover?

Rivers actually studied with the guitarist from Fates Warning, in his early years.
    No joke.

He mocks it, but that shit is definitely within him.
He's always spoken about his obsession with VH & Scorpions.

    The guy is smart, though.

He wanted to be part of the hair band scene, but knew the ship had sailed, and
completely re-did his band's image, creating the early Hipster scene.

It was obvious to me he could play, even then, but was dumbing it down a bit.

I swear to God, after the first Weezer album, nerds became babe magnets.
Guys adopted the style, the glasses.

They were kinda cool nerds, very self aware of the actual image, and how far
    to take it.

Yup, Weezer isn't making fun of 80s metal, they pay tribute to it, in a way. Of course you have a to be a bit subtle to get it.

Yeah he isn't mocking it but he actually may be tapping into something here. His band is established, a critics darling, etc. So who knows he may get some people to embrace this music again to find out it wasn't all bad. As far as his chops, I am sure that he was far more technical back when he was clubbing than today. He hasn't played guitar to impress people for 25 years.

I like it but then again I like Weezer

Weezer was one of my '90s faves! I still download (legally) a few of their tunes, and use in compilation cd's. I remember the Rivers cover of GW with the Kramer striped guitar.....I thought it was the coolest thing, as no one was representing at all at the time. New track is cool. I enjoy that they have a similar chord progression to 'Panama' near the start of the song

I like some of their stuff quite a bit, actually.
Probably my favorite is their 'Perfect Situation' video, with Canadian hottie Elisha Cuthbert.

It looks like 80s Rock is their next stage.

Last year they did some good business covering the 2 Toto songs. Toto even then covered a Weezer song. Tons of viral media and coverage. Made some good $$.
