Default The Wolfgang Saga: How 3 Brands Built Eddie Van Halen's Signature Guitar

    A really cool read:

    https://reverb.com/news/the-story-of...oOktii6pVMYNDo

All the while, in ignorance, I thought that Peavey's Wolfgang & Fender's Wolfgang were essentially the same thing.
"It wasn't Ed's playing that inspired me, it was his spirit. The playing was merely a manifestation of that spirit." - Speedway

"when I heard Me Wise Magic on I-81 in 1996...I am thinking "what a fucking waste of time the last ten years were for Van Halen." - Dave's Dreidel

I thought the title was in reference to his "never coming out" solo album.

I don’t play guitar but that was a good read.
Anybody have a favorite guitar of those 3?

I tinker on guitar and pretty much only a rhythm player. Man, does this make me want to drop a paycheck or two on a Wolfgang. More, it makes me miss seeing/hearing Ed and VH.

The Music Man is by far my favorite of the three.

Best looking figured tops, best color options & my favorite non-Marshall Ed tone started with this guitar, in particular the Balance record & tour.

Also, the most comfortable neck I've ever played on any guitar. (plus, the birdseye maple looks awesome)

    The Music Man.

I just think it's a better quality instrument.

I played a couple Peavey Wolfgangs when the first came out and I just didn't like the feel as much.

EDIT: Agree complete with Al about the neck.

The Ernie Ball Music Man is by far my favorite, for the reasons listed above. I just wish it had come with bigger fretwire, although not a huge issue at all.

I own a first year Peavey Wolfgang, previously owned 3 other Peaveys. I own two EVH Wolfgang Specials and an EVH Wolfgang Standard, previously owned two other EVH Wolfgangs. I've played my fair share of EBMM EVH/Axis guitars.

    My most succinct thoughts:
    • The EBMM probably feel highest quality, but the necks are a tad bit too narrow for me and I don't prefer their rounder fretboard radius.
    • The Peavey's approach the quality of EBMM, solid USA made instruments. Fretboard radius is the opposite end of the spectrum, much flatter. Pickups can be a bit harsh.
    • The EVH specs (most specifically compound radius and pickups) are my absolute ideal. The USA models are priced way out of my range. The Specials are great instruments for their price. Ebony is a great option for fretboards. The Standards are the best "cheap" Wolfgang ever made.

The closest to my favorite specs are the EVH guitars. But fit/finishes seemed to have been better with the other brands. I'm glad I own my Peavey and a few of the EVH Wolfs.

yeah, all great instruments. Never had an EBMM, but used the OLP version as my main gigging guitar in 2016-2017. Played 10-15 shows and several private parties. Never had one issue with it. And because I got it for $120 at a pawn shop I felt OK throwing it up over my head and catching it Yngwie style at the end of shows, lol.
Such a solid guitar, I can't even imagine how awesome the USA version is...

Had a few Peavey USA wolfs, that I ended up selling. Regret it of course...

My Zillaburst Wolf Standard has become about the only guitar I've played or recorded with in the last year or so. Just a rock solid instrument and never ever goes out of tune or even has needed a neck adjustment since the first time I set it up.

I don't think I've ever played anything with Ed's name on it that wasn't a quality and dependable product.

    ~E

*That was a really good read. Got some new info, and I thought I knew everything about Ed's guitars.

I wish that I had inserted a poll on this thread.

Dollar for dollar, which do y'all feel is the best guitar? So far, it looks like its:

    1) Ernie Ball Music Man

    2) Fender

    3) Peavey

Correct or no? Or is the Fender Wolfgang a guitar that not many have toyed with?

I played a USA wolf at GC last year and was supremely disappointed. Maybe it’s a one off thing but I was not impressed.

I've played all three and the EBMM is the best product... hands down. The other two certainly are very good guitars, but there seems to be a better level of quality with the EBMM - maybe because they weren't mass produced?. I own one that was born in 1992.. and it's my "daily driver" for the last 15 years: rehearsing, recording, gigging, couch-lounging. I like the neck for the very reason Jedi doesn't.

I've had two Peavey Wolfgangs, & currently have a Music Man EVH. The EBMM all day long for me

I've played several EVH Wolfs & the majority are just ok, imho. That said, there's a sweet Candy Apple Red Special nearby....
