Default I Want To Buy A Cheap Violin As A Gift; Where/What To Buy?

    Hello Y'all!

    I dunno why I haven't come to y'all sooner. Here's my situation:

My Wife's birthday is in a month (and we're in the process of moving, which makes the task of finding an instrument a little cumbersome).

When my Wife was younger, she played around with the violin, to the extent that she took a couple to three years of lessons.

My Wife has MS, and has limited feeling in her hand, although she has a decent enough grip. Therefore, I have been a little hesitant into buying her an instrument. Would her disease prevent her from playing? Probably not, although I want to test the waters with a cheap instrument first - thinking around $125.

The two instruments that I was interested in - one is made by Cremona; the other is made by Stentor, have decent enough ratings, but availability is spotty, and quality control at this price point isn't great.

Do y'all have any suggestions for an inexpensive $125-150 student violin? Secondly, there are online retailers that I have never heard of. That doesn't mean that they arent legitimate, but can y'all suggest some of the more reputable retailers?

    Thanks in advance

Have you thought about renting one from a local music store to see if she's interested and able? My first electric guitar was a rental until my mom knew I would play it long term, and then she got me a Fender Squier for Christmas that year.

You might be able to get two gifts in one year with the same idea
CNN may think my opinion matters, but you shouldn't.

Renting is a great idea. Some places might even "rent to own" which could save some $$ if you end up buying.

Another option would be to call your local high school or middle school that has an orchestra. Music teachers know everything about price, availability, durability, etc. since all of their students start out in the same boat you're in - needing an instrument without having to mortgage the house.

I played the violin in 5th and 6th grade. Didn't stick with it, but I think it's a cool instrument.

Saw a band called Shooting Star a few times in the early 80's, and the guitarist Van McLain(RIP), and violinist Charles Waltz , would dual. So incredibly badass.

That's a groovy thing you're doing. Hope it brings her joy.

I rented a cello for a couple of years, but at the end of the day, it would have been cheaper to buy the cello. I rented from Williams Music in Plano, TX. Give them a call and see who they recommend in your area.
