Default Ram Jam Black Betty pick tapping. WTF?

Hey, I recently indulged in oldies and guess what? Ram Jam had pick-tapping before EVH. Mark 1:55 of the video:

Never knew that. Or maybe they shot the video after the release of Van Halen I?

People were tapping well before Ed, however Ed brought it mainstream.

Ed didnít invent tapping as has been said. He didnít even incorporate it into his playing until after the Warner Bros. demo recordings.

Yeah. I knew about Billy Gibbons (ZZ Top) and Steve Hackett (Genesis) but Ram Jam?

Plenty of players were doing it, some country players like Chet Atkins were as well.

Ed just brought it to the forefront and in my humble opinion, took it next level.

Lol, one of these threads pops up once in a blue moon... Telling guitar players Eddie didn't invent tapping is like telling a 5 year old that Santa Claus/The Easter Bunny, AND The Tooth Fairy are ALL is fake!!!! He's playing Judgement Day at 1:30

LOL, you have to define what "invent tapping" means.

Was he the first to put a right hand finger on a fretboard? No. But no one who came before him took it to the level that he did, Eruption being the obvious example.
The only genre I really know is Van Halen.

IDK dude, what that Italian cat is doing is certainly a more intricate tapping pattern than Eruption. Ed def had better tone though!

I want to see a video of Jedi playing the song from 3:52 - 4:30! Kinda sounds like Big Bad Bill!! That lick at 4:18 is pure Eddie Van Halen. I heard it in "On Fire"

Ed never invented tapping, Werhner Von Braun didn't invent rockets either. But both are synonymous in their field for being innovators in their craft. Eruption & Ed's tapping technique are basically the equivalent of the Saturn V moon rocket.

    I GOT IT!
This dude would go over to Jan's house for dinner, and then a few cocktails, then Jan would whip out the old clarinet, and they would jam into the wee hours of the morning.
Meanwhile, a little Ed was peeking around the corner at the top of the stairs, just absorbing everything this dude was doing.

BTW, those other folks DO exist, ya know

Tom Scholz was doing it in '76 during his guitar solo. Go To 50:57. I know the video is from '79, but he was doing it well before then.

Yeah, I remember seeing some old 1970 video of Billy Preston's band and the guitar player was tapping away. I was like, "Wait?! WHAT!?"
