The Bangles at my high school! 1986
I couldn't believe when this video came down my Facebook feed. This was a legendary moment of our high school careers. I never thought I'd have video of it, and would have to hope people believed me when I said the Bangles played in my high school gym.
The Top 40 station in Atlanta at the time had a contest where you could send in a 3x5 index card saying, "I want Z-93 to bring The Bangles to (insert your school here)!" The metro area schools went crazier than anyone could've imagined, and eventually 3x5 index cards were sold out entirely in Georgia AND Alabama!
Education went right out the window. Our teachers might've spent five minutes teaching algebra, then we would sit in assembly line rows with each person filling out a portion of the slogan. They even had weekend lock-ins so people could fill out cards.
Our school won, but also, one of our coaches was married to a member of the station's morning show crew, so it was suspected by some that had something to do with it. Jealous haters!
As I recall we really didn't pay much strict attention to The Bangles, except to turn around every now and then and say, "Wow! There's Susannah Hoffs in our gym!" But it was pretty surreal.
The opening act was a band called EI-EI-O that I had just read about in Rolling Stone.

That's when Arty said "I'm going to become a rock star so one day I can bang Susanna Hoffs!"

Exactly! Forget the Bangles part or what high school it was, and that first four minutes is the best. Just pure, uncut `80's! It confirms what I suspected: it seems like people dressed up a little nicer and groomed a little better back then.
You're darn tootin'! The good news is, she still looks great and can wear a miniskirt without making everyone sick at 60! If she can just keep it together until she's 70, I think it might happen! Hold on, Susanna! I'm almost there!
Also note: at 1:43, a 1984 tour t-shirt AND some nerd in a red sweater his Mom made him put on, who shall remain nameless...

Hadn't thought of that since, well, 1986. My brothers were at Dunwoody High and I (now) remember that they were filling out those index cards and took all that our dad had in his office, also asking neighbors if they had any left.
Nice sweater, btw...

I didn't make the video, but I think it was a surprise to everyone, Vicki actually sang 95% of the songs, played all the leads and did all the talking. It was really her band, I guess! Susanna only played rhythm guitar and sang three or four songs, but those were the hits and she got all the MTV time. It's like if Jane Weidlin upstaged Belinda Carlisle.
I wish I'd paid a little more attention at the time. They actually had a really interesting musical history, and here was a band that figured out how to get it together and get to the top right in my gym. Why wasn't I up there taking note of what pedals they were using and how the show was run? They were riding their second or third big single at the time and had no reason to be out there playing to bozos at some high school in the boondocks. It was generous of them, really.
A couple of guys I knew got to meet them on their bus, and one said he got a hug from Susanna. I didn't even notice a bus around. I should've been on there!
Ha, thanks! That thing is burned in my mind! That was one of the only two or three wearings it ever got. I wouldn't be surprised if it's still around somewhere.

They started out as a retro British Invasion type of band. Check out Susanna's McCartney-esque head shake. I had never realized they were another Rodney Bingenheimer discovery.
