Seems like Vegas got hit pretty hard which is weird because they’re far away from the epicenter.

Yeah, the shock waves travel differently through the ground depending on mountains or flat deserts, etc. and areas relatively closer to the epicenter may not feel the quake as strongly as a location farther away due to the topography/geography.

The '92 Big Bear/Landers quakes, my wife and I were in Laughlin staying on the top floor of one of the hotels and when the first one hit at around 4am, it was really scary. Woke us out of a dead sleep. The building *really* swayed and you could hear it cracking and straining with the movement. She had left the bathtub full from overnight and it completely sloshed out and emptied into our room and you could hear and see people running down the hallways and out of the casino into the front parking lot. After about 45 minutes, things calmed down and we went back to sleep only to get woken up again about 2 hours later when the 2nd big quake hit. That's when we started hearing reports of damage back home so we quickly packed, checked out and drove home. At home here in Huntington Beach, a lot of stuff had fallen out of cabinets in the kitchen and a couple big picture frames had fallen off the walls.

Yeah those were big. I honestly don’t remember them being too bad where I was at the time. I must have been home in the valley since it was summertime.

But when we had with the Northridge quake in ‘94 I just thought we were dead. I was just waiting for the house to fall on us. I have never felt shaking like that in my life and it would not stop. It was throwing things everywhere, all I heard was glass breaking all over the house. My parents’ house was in shambles, but they basically got a new home from it. My room got so thrashed I had to sleep on the couch in the den for months. When I went outside, my car, which was parked next to the curb, had its front right wheel on the curb. The quake basically picked my car up and set it on the curb.

We then had to go and break my grandma out of her condo. She couldn’t get out, and it was like driving through a war zone with the destruction. My dad and I needed help to kick her door in to get her out, the building was all tweaked.

    What an awful day.

Yep, Northridge was the worse, scariest quake I've been through. At the time, my wife and I were still living in a 2 story condo and when it started, it woke us from a dead sleep and it was the only quake I can recall ever hearing actual rumbling not related to the structure but from the ground itself. When it was finally over, we got dressed and spent the next couple hours before dawn outside in the car listening to the radio. I think maybe half an hour later, an aftershock hit and the car was bouncing around like a group of angry teens rocking it.

We both worked together at a business in Torrance and when it became apparent by early morning that damage, especially to some freeways and just the overall chaos made it clear we weren't going to work that day. The apt building that pancaked in Reseda and the freeway overpass collapse that the motorcycle cop drove right off and plummeting to his death going into the valley was particularly terrible.

We stayed glued to the tv all day and oddly, the few things that vividly sticks in my head to this day is during the aftershocks, the shaking in the local hills would stir up all heavy clouds of dust in the air. That, and at one point early in the day during the news coverage, a news chopper was reporting on damage to one of the freeways (Santa Monica, I think) and was following a lone police car traveling down the otherwise deserted freeway coming up to a major buckle on the road and the reporters are saying "he's got to slow down or get off the freeway before he gets to that spot" and sure enough, the cop plows right into the dip bottoming out and wrecking his car. As the cop gets out of his car, you could hear people in the newsroom laughing and the reporters saying something like he's in big trouble.

I lived in Coto De Caza when the Northridge quake hit and I remember waking up and screaming "earthquake" as I ran to get out of the house.

We didn't get any damage, some pictures fell off the wall and whatnot but it scared the shit out if me.

I definitely don't miss that crap.
The only genre I really know is Van Halen.
