That’s not how I’d put it, but it took 8 threads to actually get to some sketchy behavior by the US government.

So Twitter has a “whitelist” which means no action can be taken on those accounts without human review. This was sort of exposed by a Weis screenshot of Libs of Tik Tok.

This 8th part tells us the US government was involved in a disinformation plan on social media. That this happened is already being investigated by the government. The US government got these accounts on the whitelist. In doing so, the accounts were properly labeled as being US government accounts. Then they weren’t. Which means these accounts got away with some sketchy behavior they otherwise wouldn’t have. And it took longer to figure out what they were doing.

So the US government got on the list where action isn’t automatically taken by being government accounts, then removed those labels, and then engaged in a foreign propaganda campaign with these protections in place. Twitter eventually figured it out though. So this makes the US government look bad and Twitter’s tools/whitelist policies look bad as well.

Journalist Matt Taibbi unveiled part 14 of the Twitter Files on Thursday, diving into the "Russiagate lies" and how he says a "fake tale of Russian bots" helped Democrats denounce the famous Devin Nunes report about flaws in the Trump-Russia investigation.

Emails and memos show that high-powered Democrats peddled a narrative of Russian bots despite being told directly by Twitter that there wasn't a connection to the Kremlin.

The lengthy Twitter thread began with Taibbi noting that "at a crucial moment in a years-long furor, Democrats denounced a report about flaws in the Trump-Russia investigation, saying it was boosted by Russian 'bots' and 'trolls.'"


He then indicated "Twitter officials were aghast, finding no evidence of Russian influence," and shared an email in which Twitter executives appeared to inform Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., and Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., that the social media platform "has not identified any significant activity connected to Russia with respect to Tweets posting original content to this [#ReleaseTheMemo] hashtag."


Elon Musk has been vocal about being transparent when it comes to Twitter's past and present actions curating content on the platform, including censored content. The Twitter owner has enlisted independent journalists to slowly release evidence of these actions in a series dubbed the "Twitter Files" that continue to expose once-secret communications.

"Twitter warned politicians and media they not only lacked evidence, but had evidence the accounts weren’t Russian – and were roundly ignored," Taibbi wrote. "On January 18th, 2018, Republican Devin Nunes submitted a classified memo to the House Intel Committee detailing abuses by the FBI in obtaining FISA surveillance authority against Trump-connected figures, including the crucial role played by the infamous 'Steele Dossier.'"

New Twitter Files Show Media Outlets Fell For ‘Russian Bot’ Lies

A prominent digital dashboard that claimed to track “Russian influence activities” on Twitter falsely accused hundreds of right-leaning users of being Russian bots, new documents show.

The Hamilton 68 digital dashboard, run by former FBI Agent Clint Watts, created a list of Twitter accounts it alleged were part of a Russian influence operation. Twitter executives did not find evidence of Hamilton 68’s claims and wanted to push back against the allegations, according to private communications released by veteran journalist Matt Taibbi in the latest “Twitter Files” report.


“I think we need to just call this out on the bullshit it is,” former Twitter Head of Trust and Safety Yoel Roth told colleagues in an Oct. 2017 email about Hamilton 68’s account list. Roth’s colleague Nick Pickles said in Aug. 2017 Hamilton 68’s account list was “hardly illuminating a massive influence operation,” Taibbi reported.

Roth warned colleagues in a Jan. 2018 email that “the Hamilton dashboard ‘falsely accuses a bunch of legitimate right-leaning accounts of being Russian bots,'” according to Tabbi.


Media outlets frequently cited Hamilton 68 in reports about Russian bots amplifying hashtags that promoted conservative causes, Taibbi noted. Multiple outlets claimed that hashtags about former President Donald Trump, Fox News anchor Laura Ingraham, the deep state, the 2018 midterm elections, Russiagate and other news events were promoted by Russian bots, based on Hamilton 68’s findings.

Hamilton 68 said its analysis “linked 600 Twitter accounts to Russian influence activities online” when the Alliance for Securing Democracy, a national security think tank, launched the project in 2017. The list of accounts was never released to the public.

Taibbi notes that ASD’s advisory council includes several prominent figures, including “neoconservative writer Bill Kristol, former Ambassador to Russia Michael McFaul, ex-Hillary for America chief John Podesta, and former heads or deputy heads of the CIA, NSA, and the Department of Homeland Security.”

When Twitter executives went through Hamilton 68’s list, Roth concluded in Feb. 2018 that “these accounts are neither strongly Russian nor strongly bots; they’re just generally right-leaning users. Virtually any conclusion drawn from it will take conversations in conservative circles on Twitter and accuse them of being Russian.”

The list presented an ethical challenge to Twitter, because “[r]eal people need to know they’ve been unilaterally labeled Russian stooges without evidence or recourse,” Roth said in a January 2018 email. He considered sending Hamilton 68 an ultimatum about releasing the list of accounts, according to Taibbi.

Twitter executives considered publicly refuting Hamilton 68 because “citing Hamilton 68 is being wrong, irresponsible, and biased,” a colleague said in a Feb. 2018 email to Roth. Other executives cautioned Roth against exposing the dashboard, including future White House spokesperson Emily Horne, according to Taibbi.

“[W]e have to be careful in how much we push back on ASD publicly,” Horne said to Roth in February 2018. Likewise, future Pete Buttigieg adviser Carlos Horne told Roth to “understand we have to play a longer game here” by not calling out Hamilton 68, Taibbi reported.

The Twitter accounts listed by Hamilton 68 were mostly ordinary American, Canadian and British users, according to Taibbi. The list only contained a few accounts linked to Russian propaganda network RT.

Elon Musk Snubs Democrats in Bold D.C Power Move

Twitter CEO Elon Musk made an unannounced visit to Capitol Hill last week where he held a number of high-profile sitdowns.

He had a meeting with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) and stopped in to visit newly empowered GOP Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) among others.

He met with a few others in Congress and talked with White House officials about electric vehicles and his car company Tesla.

But according to Politico, one thing Musk didn’t do was meet with congressional Democrats.

He snubbed them after being on the wrong side of their attacks for bringing free speech back to America.

Schiff and company got used to ordering social media companies to censor conservatives and Musk put an end to that, at least on Twitter.

He did speak briefly with House Minority Leader Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) but according to Politico, that was an unscheduled run-in as he bumped into him outside McCarthy’s office.

Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) was not impressed with the snub, saying: “I think it’s seriously a mistake and I think it would be a good thing to have him come in and explain himself.”

“I am deeply concerned with how he’s running that company into the ground,” said Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA).

“It seems like a vanity project that is going wrong with an explosion of hate speech on that platform.”

The reason for the snub became clear when he met Oversight Chair James Comer (R-KY), who is hauling in ex-Twitter executives to talk about past censorship.

According to Politico, Musk waived attorney-client privileges so Comer’s hearings will have more bite than bark, which is not the norm on the Hill.


Politico reported:

In fact, during the meeting Musk waived attorney-client privileges for some information that Comer had requested for his upcoming hearing, Comer said in an interview.

“That was my only ask,” Comer said.

One of the expected witnesses is Twitter’s former chief legal counsel Vijaya Gadde who Comer requested to testify about her decision to remove the New York Post’s reporting on Hunter Biden’s laptop.

Accommodating the GOP is in keeping with Musk’s current political outlook.

He endorsed the GOP ahead of the midterm elections, welcomed former President Donald Trump back to Twitter and obligingly dumped a series of “Twitter files” to make the case that Democrats and previous company executives colluded to restrain speech on the platform, along with several other conservative-friendly moves.

In all, Musk has in recent months aligned himself with Republicans in ways that are relatively unusual for a tech billionaire — but could prove beneficial when it comes to potential GOP oversight, or lack thereof.

“It just shows the Elon approach to Washington. When you think of all these things that tech execs did to avoid the appearance of impropriety and then Musk blasts through this and is like, ‘I don’t care,’” said a former Twitter communications officer who also worked on the Hill and asked to remain anonymous to speak more freely.

“That’s the type of stuff that is just a complete change. It’s just a huge departure from congressional norms.”
