    Default New appreciation for Jump!

Musically, i always thought this tune was the most mindless, plinking
keyboard melody of all time, but....

Hearing it transposed to guitar, the chords are so rich & creative.
    I had no idea.

Never loved it but I always dug it. Especially the solo.

Heard some stuff in this breakdown I've never heard before. Whether it's on guitar or keys those are cool chords.

I've always liked the music from Jump, although I will say that the lyrics are definitely not among Dave's best.
"It's so lonely at the top because it's so crowded at the bottom" - Diamond David Lee Roth

"The truth sounds like hate to those who hate the truth" - Todd Wagner

If I was the lead singer in VH back then, I would have told EVH this.... ‘you’re a guitar hero man, no one wants to see you play keyboards...”

    Yep!

I thought it was a cool episode too - gave me a new appreciation for the song.

Notice that Rick Beato, when talking about the keys during the solo part (which are cool as hell btw), he says that it is basically EDM?

I thought that was an interesting observation.

I always thought the Jump lyrics were Dave's first thoughts about Van Halen suicide.

Knowing how the lyrics were conceived (Dave and Ted vetoing it for years, Ed building 5150 to record it -- "Take it or leave it"), it's very likely how Dave felt while writing them that afternoon in Ted's car. Pushed to the edge.

Dave's too clever to just write a song around that newscast for no good reason. Why else would he think of that guy?

Read them again from the perspective of Dave relating his career to the guy in newscast:
Am I good-looking enough, am I too old to jump away from the VH record machine?

And, much like Dancing in the Dark for Springsteen, a song in which the writer implies in his lyrics that he hates the very song he's writing becomes the band's biggest hit because of the synth. So Dave (and Bruce) came to embrace it, lyrical irony and all.

... then again, sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.

My band plays Jump and know its far from a generic pop song. The part under the guitar solo is one that simply needs everybody to be on time or it falls apart.

Right on! And the pre chorus part has that 3/4 tempo which is damn cool. It is a pop tune with balls.

    No kidding, right?

    I guess that's why it's still a hit 35 years later.
