So...I’m curious. What does everyone really think happened? Did Dave leave? Was Dave Fired?

Do you believe the VH brother’s version or DLR’s? Or is it somewhere in between?

Seems the General consensus is that most believe Eddie’s version of the end of Classic VH and refute his version of Sammy’s ousting.

Always struck me as odd that Sammy being kicked to the curb and his version is somehow easier to believe than DLR’s account.

From all the years, the interviews, what people like MA have said on here, and everything else, this is my best guess (could be totally wrong):

    * Dave wanted to do his movie thing and then come back to VH
    * Ed was going to do a multi-singer album
    * Ed met Sam and hit it off
    * DLR got a band together (getting Sheehan pissed Ed off)
    * And that was that

There was never an official "I quit" or "Your fired" like there was with Sam and Gary.
If I don't respond to you it means I have you on ignore, which means you are a douchenozzle.

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

I won't speculate much about who said what when and snubbed who and instigated a breakup or reacted to what.
Basically, I think two guys who never really enjoyed being in the same room together had finally gotten to a point where they truly could no longer tolerate being in the same room together, and once the sacred VH circle was broken and loyalties came into real question (i.e. outside projects, mud-slinging, etc..) then the gig was up.
I remember seeing it coming well before, and predicting after the release of '84 that they'd soon split. So, while saddened by the news, I wasn't shocked.

Thanks, never saw that interview before. Maybe it's a product of the times but is Dave uber-SoCal here?

Nice post there. This is new to me, so I appreciate it.

The whole thing made me remind of that 1985 interview video that EVH gave to MTv (Hard Rock Cafe, I guess) and how Edward was tense back talkin' 'bout the 'next album' after 1984 and stuff.
TT: "Wow, you can play acoustic guitar?"
    EVH: "Sure. What's the difference? It's got six strings... It's a guitar!" - 31.12.1978

There was a British rock press guy, I can visualize him, but I can't remember his name, who summarized the VH breakup pretty succinctly.

"One guy is sitting on this side of the room, with a stack of money to his left, and a stack of cocaine to his right, saying "Fuck you"

And there is another guy sitting on the other side of the room, with a stack of money to his left, and a stack of cocaine to his right, saying "Fuck you too"."
