Default Eddie should release the vault stuff!

Mods, feel free to delete or merge at your discretion...

Something I was just thinking about is Eddie's reluctance about releasing old shows etc. from 'the vault'. We've all griped about this at some point before but I was literally just mulling over some points in my head.

They released Fair Warning with the obvious bass level drop in STIL, and Diver Down with a complete section of PW missing... These were commercial albums with 'mistakes', and let's not forget Ed's obvious faux pas in the official Unchained video from '81... Yet us fans love the imperfections. Does the US Fest ring a bell? Hardly a finely tuned or perfect performance, yet we all love it and know it by heart.

Eddie has done pretty well with his gear line(s) and some folks have dropped a fortune on the relic'd guitars that aren't perfect or nice and shiney. Ed even surprised me when talking about thinking about releasing old demos and stuff, before aborting the project. The fact that he/they even tried going through those archives is (to me) a sign that they know the fans would love it and have spoken about it. Thing is, many of us WANT to see the old footage with warts and all! Then they put out Tokyo Live, and you can't tell me that they consider that to be the cream of the crop? Yet there it is with a pro release...

    I just don't get it.
Remember Eddie's old remark about "I'll take the fortune, you can have the fame..."? He is a millionaire many times over, yet IMO has lost out on a sh*tload more over the years.

Again, I just don't get it...

"Van Halen was never about the singer..." - A very wise fan.

I believe the STIL bass level drop is done on purpose, for dynamics. It's harder to notice with drums on a recording, but Al plays that part of the tune quieter as well, and the clean guitar part is quieter of course. Then all the dynamics of each player pump up when they blaze into the chorus.

Just my opinion. I've never felt that bass part was a mistake that nobody noticed.

The bass drop has always bothered me. No idea if it was a mistake or not, but it's pretty obvious, so I'm guessing not.

What did(n't) they do to Pretty Woman? Haven't heard that story before.

It's pretty simple. He doesn't care and it's work. Just think about it, put yourself in his shoes. He's got more money than he needs. He'd get zero enjoyment doing the project.

If you had a project you could do for a bunch of people but had zero interest in it, didn't need the money from it, and would consider it a huge hassle to do....would you just up and do it? I wish he would though, I wish he could grasp how much happiness it would give people....just how many individual people's day would brighten because of him. Maybe that's the only way it'd happen, if he somehow would care about directly giving joy to a lot of people. But that's not gonna happen, heck, we typically don't do that ourselves in our daily lives.

I think the gear gets in the way. Projects like this would take time and the gear line is getting that time.
You also have to be willing to immerse yourself in this VH "bootleg" world. You gotta wanna be invested in projects like this and he just doesn't want to, apparently.

If that's the case I wish he would let someone who is all in on releasing old VH goodies have the reigns.

Yeah, he get's enjoyment with the gear stuff. Would be nice like you said to have someone excited about it take over the reigns in that area....with Ed getting final approval of everything. That's one thing I don't understand. Surely he has someone who he can tell "let's start releasing archive material" then he's hands off till approval of stuff. Probably not that simplistic I suppose.

    Zero chance of it happening.

Much more interesting to discuss the possibility of a STEALTH mission to 5150 at night to retrieve them treasures locked in the vaults and finally let them see the light of day.

    Code name: OCEAN'S 5150

So who's on the look out and who's driving the getaway car?!?!

Yeah it sucks. He could just choose a project (like '79), let them raid the vaults and all the while he's not having to do much of anything.
I'm sure he knows people in these industries he could trust to do good work.

Just goes back to the fact he's not into it, sadly.

If he has any inclination to release the vault material at all, he probably figures that Wolf will handle it when he is gone. And make money on it then. Just my .02 cents.

Yep. We ain't seeing anything until Wolf needs to pay for a divorce.

Leaving out part of Pretty Woman always bothered me too.
If I don't respond to you it means I have you on ignore, which means you are a douchenozzle.

they missed a full verse of the song (I think, I haven't listened to the original in years but when I did it was obvious, it was just a long time ago)

There's no reason Eddie has to do much of anything except give final approval. Rush has been retired for 4 years and still releases archive stuff every year, it's damn sure not because Geddy and Alex say "Hey, let's spend six months going through old tapes" every year. And that's how almost all these old bands operate, they have people that do that for them. They also don't sit around and maintain and update their website, they have people to do that for them. The reason there are no VH releases or website activity or even communication is because Van Halen hasn't had an actual organization around it in 20 years. There is no team, there's no one curating anything, there's no one to run any projects, there's no one to even suggest ideas about what the fans may like. The whole band/business organization is Eddie, Alex, Janie, and Wolfgang. And they're some of the most un-motivated people I've ever seen.

Check out 3:45, that's how it works:

    But VH has no "suits".

The missing part is at 1:42 and it is just two lines, not a whole verse.

I actually think it was intentionally dropped because the Van Halen version sounds "cleaner" without it IMO.
The only genre I really know is Van Halen.

I don't know why anyone is putting this all at Ed's feet. Al isn't selling gear. Why isn't Al pursuing releasing demos and old live shows? Why isn't DLR pushing for that? Wolf? They are technically a band. A disfunctional band, but a band none the less. Plenty of blame to go around.
