Default Women And Children First vs Diver Down

VH1988 asked me to match up these two albums from the original Dave era which are currently tied for last in the Favorite VH Album From The Original Dave Era poll.

Diver Down is my least favorite from the 6 pack and Women And Children First alternates between 4th and 5th place with 1984. That being said, I think WACF is a far superior album. It was VH's first record of all original material and it contains 3 of my all-time top 10 VH songs in Everybody Wants Some!!, Romeo Delight and In A Simple Rhyme. The 4 originals on Diver Down are stellar, but the abundance of covers makes it no match for WACF.

    That was my $.02.

WACF hands down. A classic album with everybody on their A game.

Lol. DD is a great fun, albeit lazy album. Great snare and kick drum sound for Al but if you actually pay attention to the drums, he barely does any tom fills throughout the album.

As Brook said, the whole band is on their "A" game, performance wise on WACF. DD, not really.

It was also the first album where Dave noticeably dialed back his banshee screams. Perhaps beginning to try and save his voice a bit?

I can see where people who like pop music more than heavier guitar/drum driven hard rock would like an album such as DD more. As a VH fan, I dont get it, but I can see it.

WACF is VH at arguably their heaviest and rawest, doing their classic "falling down the stairs and landing on their feet" routine better than any band ever has. It's also the first album to really start to branch out from the more radio ready 3 minute song format more prevalent in the first two albums, with longer intros, breakdowns, and outros. I dont see there being too many surprises on who picks which album here.

Women and Children First was the album that made me a Van Halen fanatic. "And the Cradle Will Rock...," "Everybody Wants Some!!" and "Take Your Whiskey Home" were all over the radio at the time. I remember driving around with the windows down, blasting the tunes all the time. And while I really like Diver Down, in hindsight it sounds like was is was: Warner Bros making VH rush a release to capitalize on the success of "Oh, Pretty Woman," but it is a fun album.

I love Diver Down, especially Secrets, Hang em High and Little Guitars.

But I have to go with WACF for this matchup. Romeo Delight is A+ Van Halen, along with Everybody Wants Some and Take Your Whisky Home. In a Simple Rhyme May be one of the band’s greatest rare tracks.

I almost liken WACF & DD to the Use Your Illusion albums, where the best halves of each could've made one great record and the rest is stuff I don't listen to.

I'm going with Diver Down... I just enjoy it more. I know it's essentially a covers album, but there's some great nuggets on there. The Full Bug, Secrets, Where Have All The good Times Gone... Cathedral! Little Guitars! I saw Van Halen at Red Rocks and when they cut into Little Guitars with that opening riff, even my brother was like, "Wow!" And I'm one of the few people that likes Dancing In The Street - wicked solo.

Just out of curiosity, which half of WACF do you not listen to?

Diver Down by a hair for me. There is very little, really, between my top CVH and bottom CVH, but Diver Down has always been closer to the top. Most would agree that nobody can cover a song like Van Halen, so what could be better than essentially a VH covers album with a few amazing originals thrown in?!

The debut had 2 great covers and VH II had 1. Diver Down had 5, which for me was way too many.

Diver Down sounds amazing, but falls about 4 songs short. WACF, no covers, just original VH awesome from 1-9.
