Awards:
Women And Children First vs Diver Down
VH1988 asked me to match up these two albums from the original Dave era which are currently tied for last in the Favorite VH Album From The Original Dave Era poll.
Diver Down is my least favorite from the 6 pack and Women And Children First alternates between 4th and 5th place with 1984. That being said, I think WACF is a far superior album. It was VH's first record of all original material and it contains 3 of my all-time top 10 VH songs in Everybody Wants Some!!, Romeo Delight and In A Simple Rhyme. The 4 originals on Diver Down are stellar, but the abundance of covers makes it no match for WACF.
That was my $.02."It's so lonely at the top because it's so crowded at the bottom" - Diamond David Lee Roth
"The truth sounds like hate to those who hate the truth" - Todd Wagner
"Women and Children First ... The REAL Van Halen III"

"He has a swaggering retro machismo that will give hives to the Steinem cabal" -Camille Paglia on Donald Trump
"But, fucking with Brook is like fucking with hot shit on and ax handle. You just don't get a grip"-track5
"Make way for the bad guy"- Tony Montana
'This hamburger don't need no helper"- David Lee Roth
"I wish Bon Jovi would've given me a call before he recorded all of his hits, because the lyrics would've been smarter, the melodies would've been much more smashing, and they would've sold a lot fewer records." -David Lee Roth
"My beef is people thinking Bon Jovi is good cuz they sold lots of records to housewives." -tango
"But being number one doesn’t really mean jack fuck all. We sold twice as many records as other records that year (1984) that landed in the Number One position." ~Eddie Van Halen

Lol. DD is a great fun, albeit lazy album. Great snare and kick drum sound for Al but if you actually pay attention to the drums, he barely does any tom fills throughout the album.
As Brook said, the whole band is on their "A" game, performance wise on WACF. DD, not really.
It was also the first album where Dave noticeably dialed back his banshee screams. Perhaps beginning to try and save his voice a bit?
I can see where people who like pop music more than heavier guitar/drum driven hard rock would like an album such as DD more. As a VH fan, I dont get it, but I can see it.
WACF is VH at arguably their heaviest and rawest, doing their classic "falling down the stairs and landing on their feet" routine better than any band ever has. It's also the first album to really start to branch out from the more radio ready 3 minute song format more prevalent in the first two albums, with longer intros, breakdowns, and outros. I dont see there being too many surprises on who picks which album here.
