Ocasio-Cortez Move Allows Her Staff To Avoid Financial Disclosure Laws

Democratic socialist Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) has portrayed herself as being an outsider whose goal is to clean up politics in Washington, D.C., yet her actions suggest otherwise.

Under the new "living wage" rules she set for her staff, "Ocasio-Cortez’s decision to cap her office salaries at $80,000 will let her chief of staff and senior employees avoid public transparency laws that would require them to reveal outside income, gifts, and stock trading activity," the Washington Examiner reported.

Ocasio-Cortez chief of staff Saikat Chakrabarti — a wealthy Silicon Valley entrepreneur who recently bought a $1.6 million home in Maryland — would be protected from having to follow the public disclosure laws.

The Examiner noted that a government watchdog group, the National Legal and Policy Center (NLPC), "said the $80,000 salary cap for Ocasio-Cortez’ senior staffers was concerning because it could be used to intentionally evade financial disclosure laws."

Tom Anderson, the director of the NLPC’s Government Integrity Project, said: "Purposefully underpaying staffers in order to avoid transparency is an old trick some of the most corrupt members of Congress have used time and again."

The Examiner added that Ocasio-Cortez's office refused to respond to a request for comment on the issue.

A separate report from the Examiner in mid-February also cast doubt on the authenticity of the image that Ocasio-Cortez is trying to portray of herself.

"[Ocasio-Cortez] recently moved into a luxury apartment complex in Washington, D.C. that does not offer the affordable housing units that were a key plank in the New York congresswoman’s campaign platform," the Examiner reported.

"The freshman congresswoman, a self-described socialist, campaigned on a platform to expand affordable housing, and her controversial Green New Deal proposal promises 'Safe, affordable, adequate housing' for all," the Examiner continued. "But Ocasio-Cortez’s new building — built by leading D.C. developer WC Smith — is part of a luxury complex whose owners specifically do not offer affordable units under Washington, D.C.’s Affordable Dwelling Units program."

On Wednesday, Ocasio-Cortez was hit with a complaint filed with the Federal Election Commission (FEC) in which the Coolidge Reagan Foundation alleges that the 29-year-old congresswoman may have illegally laundered money to her boyfriend through an allied PAC that was started by Chakrabarti. The Daily Wire reported:

The complaint highlighted a report from earlier in February by Luke Thompson, who "published an article entitled 'The Congresswoman Loves the Swamp. Her Wealthy Chief of Staff Used a PAC to Pay Her Boyfriend,' on Medium, which parses FEC records to reveal evidence Ocasio-Cortez funneled money from her official campaign account to her boyfriend, Riley Roberts."

The complaint added: "The timing and amounts of these transactions, the use of two affiliated entities as intermediaries, the vague and amorphous nature of the services Riley ostensibly provided, the magnitude of these transactions compared to both the limited funds the campaign had raised at the time and the total amount of its expenditures, and the romantic relationship between Ocasio-Cortez and Riley collectively establish reason to believe these transactions may have violated campaign finance law."​

S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez responded Saturday night after a published report excoriated the freshman congresswoman for pushing her Green New Deal initiative while still traveling on airplanes and using ridesharing services -- instead greener travel methods such as public transportation.

The piece mentioned the New York Democrat’s call in January for more sustainable energy solutions: "The world is going to end in 12 years if we don’t address climate change,” she said at the time.

"But the woman who boasts of a “razor-sharp BS detector” seems to have trouble sniffing out her own,” the New York Post reported. “Since declaring her candidacy in May 2017, Ocasio-Cortez’s campaign heavily relied on those combustible-engine cars — even though a subway station was just 138 feet from her Elmhurst [Queens] campaign office. She listed 1,049 transactions for Uber, Lyft, Juno and other car services, federal filings show. The campaign had 505 Uber expenses alone.”


Instead of embracing cheaper, less green travel methods, Ocasio-Cortez logged 66 airline transactions during her 2018 campaign while only using Amtrak 18 times, according to the Post.

Cortez responded on Twitter, arguing that "living in the world as it is isn't an argument against working towards a better future."

“I also fly & use A/C," Ocasio-Cortez wrote. “The Green New Deal is about putting a LOT of people to work in developing new technologies, building new infrastructure, and getting us to 100% renewable energy.”

The Green New Deal is an economic stimulus package designed to address income inequality, health care and climate change. The concept – modeled after President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal package through public works programs – could be funded through a 70 percent tax on America’s top earners.

Ocasio-Cortez has been a fierce advocate for addressing climate change. She recently questioned whether young couples should have children given the devastating consequences facing Earth unless an unprecedented effort is made to reduce carbon gas emissions by 2030.

Patrick Moore, the co-founder of Greenpeace, slammed socialist Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) on Saturday for being a hypocrite over living a lifestyle that does not align with her extremist views on climate change.

Moore, who has a Ph.D. in ecology, called out Ocasio-Cortez after she mocked a New York Post article that highlighted her numerous flights and car travel — which are things she attacked in her Green New Deal.

"I also fly & use A/C Living in the world as it is isn’t an argument against working towards a better future," Ocasio-Cortez tweeted. "The Green New Deal is about putting a LOT of people to work in developing new technologies, building new infrastructure, and getting us to 100% renewable energy."

Moore fired back: "The "world as it is" has the option of taking the subway rather than a taxi. option of Amtrak rather than plane, option of opening windows rather than A/C. You're just a garden-variety hypocrite like the others. And you have ZERO expertise at any of the things you pretend to know."


This was hardly Moore's first time going after Ocasio-Cortez on Twitter.

"Yup. If you don’t like the #GreenNewDeal, then come up with your own ambitious, on-scale proposal to address the global climate crisis," Ocasio-Cortez tweeted on February 22. "Until then, we’re in charge - and you’re just shouting from the cheap seats."

Moore responded: "Pompous little twit. You don’t have a plan to grow food for 8 billion people without fossil fuels, or get the food into the cities. Horses? If fossil fuels were banned every tree in the world would be cut down for fuel for cooking and heating. You would bring about mass death."


Other times Moore has criticized Ocasio-Cortez include:

"'@AOC 's Green New Deal calls for: '(J) removing greenhouse gases from the atmosphere,'" Moore tweeted. "Technically (scientifically) this would mean removing all H2O vapour and all CO2 which would mean the eradication of all life on Earth. Brilliant."


Tweeting about Ocasio-Cortez's notion that the world is going to end in 12 years, Moore wrote: "Do you think AOC really believes the world will end in 12 years? Or does she think Democrats are stupid enough to believe her? Either way she is way out to lunch."



"Good photo of @AOC after being told she's not really in charge, or The Boss," Moore tweeted in response to Ocasio-Cortez's recent claim that she was "the boss."




"It seems many people agree that @AOC is a bit too big for her britches," Moore tweeted. "I'm in good company here. @POTUS is right to encourage her to keep blathering insanity. There can't be 5% who support giving up planes, hamburgers, gasoline, and reliable electricity."

The mother of soak-the-rich congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said that she was forced to flee the Big Apple and move to Florida because the property taxes were so high.

“I was paying $10,000 a year in real estate taxes up north. I’m paying $600 a year in Florida. It’s stress-free down here,” Blanca Ocasio-Cortez told the Daily Mail from her home in Eustis, a town of less than 20,000 in central Florida north of Orlando.


The mother-of-two — who calls herself BOC — said she picked Eustis because a relative already lived there and right before Christmas 2016 she paid $87,000 for an 860-square-foot home on a quiet street that dead-ends at a cemetery.

Her daughter raised eyebrows with her pitch to raise the top marginal tax rate on income earned above $10 million to 70 percent.

She has also gotten behind the so-called Green New Deal, that would see a massive and costly government effort to address climate change the way Franklin D. Roosevelt launched the New Deal to rescue the US economy during the Depression.
