Default 24 Years Since Balance was released

Just saw this on FB, can't believe it's been that long. I was working nights and stayed up to buy it, I was so fired up as they played a ton of the album on the radio prior to release but I only actually heard little snippets here and there. Loved it at first but now, while I still think it has some really, really cool stuff on it, it's obvious the problems with Sam and Ed had boiled over to the songwriting process. Some stuff sounds forced and that drives me nuts. standout tracks for me are The Seventh Seal, DTM, Amsterdam, Aftershock, Take me back and the instrumental (I'm not looking up how to spell it).

Love the end of aftershock, they're just tearing it up...the solo on Feelin' is mind numbing.

I'll give this 5 posts before it turns into a Hagar bash fest or Sam vs Dave but figured I'd post it anyway.

Hagar was a better singer than Dave. Dave was a better performance deva!
Hagar hates Dave, Dave called Hagar A chump.

There, got it started before post 5. What do I win?

I remember being so stoked when the album came out. They were absolutely on fire, and I really enjoyed the semi-dark direction the album had. Most of the songs still sound great. Looking back on it is bittersweet because I know how much trouble was going on behind the scenes and how one of the greatest rock bands ever that always seemed to be the best of friends couldn't stand each other. I hope that Sammy, Mike, Eddie and Al can bury the hatchet some day and all forgive each other. Life is too short for the nonsense.

Whoops I started a similar thread that should be closed as you beat me to it. Here’s my post:

BALANCE released on this date in 1995

    http://www.vhnd.com/balance/

I was a junior in high school when this album was released. On lunch break a large crew of stoned teenagers hit the local Best Buy and bought it.

At the time it was my favorite VH album. I saw 5 shows on that tour and was excited to watch the band evolving into the 90s. As 24 years have passed its ranking falls into my least fave of the Hagar years.

The album went double platinum in record time but then stalled after that proving VH had a massive built in audience but they were up against a very different musical landscape as grunge was in favor. Still their tour was the 5th highest grossing of 1995.

VH should have issued heavier hitting singles off of this album. Not sure who made the decision to release the ballads but in hindsight they should’ve pushed Seventh Seal and Aftershock.

Anyways cheers to a great album and one that made a huge impact on me. IMO, the last great VH album.

Enjoy this clip. Eddie’s tone is fucking nasty.

I still have the album release party on cassette and cd-r. I remember listening to it in my old band's rehearsal spot, with beers, girls, and pizza...

Great album, overall. I love the guitar tone. Songs like Amsterdam, Aftershock, Don't Tell Me, Feelin' etc. have so much power to them IMO. Eddie had a lot of neat ideas going on, as usual.
I even like the ballads... I'm wired that way and enjoy it when musicians I look up to show off their sensitive and creative sides.

Still don't think that Doin' Time should've been included, as NOTHING will ever top the Hot for Teacher intro as a recorded showcase for Al's skills. Neat that they finally used the No More Waiting guitar intro on a studio track, although Take Me Back is in the bottom half of the tunes for me on Balance. Pretty cool for most VH fans is the pristine concert PPV from Toronto in '95.

I would love to have had more VH with this lineup!

Balance was my fave Sam Halen album for a long time. Just loved the Fairbairn production with Ed’s tone. Crispy crunchy dark cocoa puff. But as other have already mentioned, I finally came to realize it’s kind of a slap shot record, patchworked and spliced. The instrumentals are weak obviously and the tentpole tracks don’t stand the test of time. The cover of CSLY is cringeworthy, the super ballad NE is awful. That said, the solo in Feelin’ is wicked, Aftershock is a fine craft, and Crossing Over is an epic tune. If Sam had cut the choruses in half on DTMWLCD it might’ve been an all time great.

I had to hunt for it, but I always thought the GW interview for Balance was pretty telling in where Ed was at, at the time. Some interesting stuff in there. 7th Seal was a demo from the 70s. Crazy.

I love Balance, with a couple of exceptions.

But it staggers the mind, I was in my first apartment shortly after college then. I'm 50 now. And since then they've released 1 album everybody hated and 1 album of music that was already very old when Balance was released... that's it.

I liked Balance a lot when it was first released, but I don’t think it has held up as well as most of the other VH albums. Aftershock and Amsterdam are the highlights for me.

I really like the Balance album. It's my second favorite of the Sammy era, behind 5150. I wish all of the Sammy led albums had this kind of production. Eddie had some pretty inspired playing on this album and Sammy was a bit more serious in his approach. Despite the ailments the VH boys had during the tour, they sure sounded as tight as ever.

I always liked NE, I like the instrumental arrangement, I like the vocals and of course the harmonies are gold. The guitar solo fits that song so well and just sounds awesome. I know it's a ballad but I always thought it was pretty awesome....I know I'm in the minority on that. the video was pretty cool too.

Can’t Stop Lovin You is a great pop rock song. It hit #9 on Billboard Hot 100. So people liked it.

I personally love it. I’m indifferent to Not Enough although I know Eddie loved it.

I think Not Enough is a great song. Well written.

written and executed. Eddie's solo fits perfectly, and is distinctly 'Him' without resorting to fretboard tricks... I also love his piano playing.

A few years back Wolfgang cited Balance as his fave Hagar era album and noted Not Enough as the most beautiful song he thought dad had wrote. He also cited the Amsterdam solo as one of Ed’s best.

I imagine Wolf has great memories of this album as it’s the first he remembers.

Ed and Sam talk about the song in an interview from the end of the RHRN tour, so it was written before everything went totally to hell, I've always liked it.
