Default Why we should want the whole world to get rich

Great video that explains pretty well how it benefits every person as an individual when people around the world have better lives.

Of course I'm too lazy to watch the video.

I don't think it would help anything, though. Has it helped us that our manufacturing is now done in China? That our clothes are made in Honduras? That our guitars are built in Mexico?

It's the same as "rock stardom." Everyone has the ability to create a studio quality recording on their desktop now. Only a few try, and even fewer succeed. Having access to the tools hasn't changed the allocation of ambition and talent. And now that everyone can potentially do it, rock stardom isn't what it was in 1988. It's great for someone like me, but not for someone who played arenas in 1990 and now struggles to be noticed above us wanna-be's.

    Down with wealth, I say!

A better example: YouTube. I don't have cable, Netflix or Hulu. I watch YouTube videos made by regular people. It does not help NBC, CBS, ABC, FOX or HBO that people can buy some equipment from B&H Photo and make videos of the same quality as networks in their bedroom. I find a cell phone video of someone trying to give a cat a bath more entertaining than network TV and big budget movies.

I didn't even watch the video and I'm full of opinions.

From a purely simplistic perspective, sure it would be better if everyone around the world was better off. Not sure we need to watch a video to agree to this. As with all things the question becomes how do we get there.

Not what the video is about.

It's about how the world becoming better off has ALREADY worked. One of the basic equations is that the larger the amount of people who want something and have the resources to acquire it, the more we get it.

This internet we are using at the moment proves that. If only 10 people were in a position to use it, it would not exist.

That's why you should watch the video. It has been happening for centuries. It actually is about the "selfish reasons why we should want the world to be better for all".

Not only do we know how to do it...I highly doubt we could stop it at this point. The genie is out of the bottle.

Watched it - nothing new. The one point they missed on is that "rich" is relative. Poor people in Canada are rich by any historical standards, hasn't made people any happier. Because it is human nature to compare your life to those around you (particularly those who have more), not those that lived 100 years ago.

No he gave her the finger earlier in the week because she took away the college level physics text book. He was pissed because he wanted to see how the equation proofed. It was a total injustice in his book, he still mumbles about it this morning.

Darrin shamed me into watching it. I watched, and my rebuttal was already perfect. As Mike says, we've heard this before. Rush Limbaugh, Ayn Rand and the "ever expanding pie."

"With the advent of the internet, the news can be delivered immediately, without the cost of paper! And the more informed people are, the more they'll WANT to be informed! What a boon for the news business! Increased demand with decreased costs!"

Actually what's happened is newspapers are fizzling, whether on paper or online. People now get their news from whatever source suits their bias, often shady propaganda websites run by single proprietors. Like record companies, having the ability to report news in the hands of more people is not making them wealthier. It's beginning to happen to the TV networks, too.

I've never gotten a slice of pie and then went back and found the slice had regenerated itself. The pie is, in fact, of a fixed size.
