5150: The All Out Attempt (Pic Heavy)
Hey guys!
I posted this upon completion last week on a lot of places, and I saved the best for last! Apologies if you guys saw this already, just couldn't forget about the only VH forum I still go to!!
This project started long before I carved the forearm wood grain and painted it white. Months before that Christopher Locke, myself and several other consultants set out to create the best 5150 body available. Five body prototype, many emails, attachments and revisions later I believe we have accomplished that goal.
After tireless nights of painting, taping and relicing, I believe that I have created the best 5150 I’ve ever made. For this particular build, I modelled it after the guitar in 1986-1987 in the prime years of its use. With the basswood body from Locke Customs, the best neck in the world from the folks at Musikraft, the correct vintage non-brand Gotoh tuners, prototype “whale tail” Floyd Rose, and Pariah pickup, bent legs and all like the real deal. The string trees are all correct, and I personally made this logo to get the closest proportions as I could to the original. The decals are worn, the cigarette burns are textured and I believe I have the correct washer/eyebolt combination for that era. The fretboard is aged with the correct placement of lacquer and raw wood. I even paid attention to the darkness of each fret and added in string gunk in the appropriate areas. Eagle eyed 5150 guys will notice I simulated the filled in tuner holes and seams where extra wood was added to the original headstock.
The Musikraft headstock is just a timeless classic to me, and I can’t recommend that neck, or any of their products enough! The one of a kind strap was recreated by the extraordinarily talented Sean Christopher! Thanks to the sharp eyes of one of my buddies, Devin Hull, discovered the first use of the strap on the mini les paul during the US Festival, or any show around that time. Thanks to Devin, we also saw the first picture of the 5150 backstage at the same show.
It sits inside a real vintage Kramer case, identical to the one he would’ve got at the time (and the same one he used for the Hot For Teacher Kramer). Case Candy includes a replica leather strap with similar taped up wireless receiver, 5150 picks and a 5150 pass. For some fun I included some of Pariah’s artwork to really set off a case candy photo.
I learned a whole lot on this build, and I made a lot of great friends along the way. I hope you guys enjoy these pictures as much as I do!! Thank you so very much for everyone who played a role in this build, you guys are the best!!

Maybe Melody shouldn't be too proud. It looks like she came in last.
