Sammy, with Ed's tune rocked Humans Being. It's sad that they stopped with that. Such ground rocking VH that might've come?

not only one of their best tunes, definately, by far, their best video production ever.

no they didn't bring anyone in from what i can remember, ed just said in interviews they didnt want him to write lyrics about a tornado and sammy did anyway.

good on sammy for not listening to ed's bullshit, look what that did to the vhiii album.

My understanding is that *Ed* wrote most of the lyrics -- or at least put down the original vocals. Sammy was largely unavailable (which contributed to the break up) because his wife was having a baby. He flew into LA for brief studio sessions. That's why the vocals are heavily processed to hide the fact that it's mostly Ed.

Ironically, I think this is one of the BEST Sammy era tunes - the intro is just awesome. In fact, I really love the engineering work around 1996. Alex's drums sound perfect and Ed's guitar tone, while not exactly like '78, is crisp.

I believe Ed and producer Glen Ballard came up with the melody for the chorus......"shine on......shine on.........

As far as the actual lyrics, I think Sammy wrote them.....but the flow of the tune was dictated by Ed and the producer.

As far as the heavily processed vocals to hide the fact that its Ed singing more so than Sam.......I've never heard that before.

The low end growl at the end......you know the Gene Simmons sound........I had read that was Ed.........Sam took off.........and Ed put the finishing touches on the tune.

Definitely one of my favorite tunes. Whenever someone I know says Sammy was fired because Van Halen was getting too stale I put Humans Being on. I can only imagine what kind of music we would be hearing if Hagar hadn't of left.

It is a very good song but i just dont like sammy's vocal's that much and I thought sammy did not write these lyrics and He was pissed about having to sing them ???

For the Dave fans who will slam me for this screw off.I was just listening to VH Best Of Vol. 1.Humans Being is just a fucking great song.It is to bad VH can not get shit together along with Sammy and put something together.God love Dave,but he just doesn't have it anymore.

Hey I`m a huge DLR era VH fan but that doesn`t change the fact Humans Being freaking Rocks , one of my favorite songs with Sam at the helm .

Yes, "We're just Humans...Humans Being" is definitely Ed. Although it's really hard to tell, it sounds like Ed has a vocal track buried deep in the mix through much of the tune similar to "Crossing Over".

The lyrics do not sound like Hagar had much input at all. My guess is that if Ed & Glen Ballard had limited vocal tape of Sammy to work with, they added the effects in post-production to cover any mistakes rather than get Hagar back in the studio.

In any case, it makes for a great tune. To this day, I still don't understand why Ed & Dave don't simply send tapes back and forth rather than deal with all the personal conflicts that arise in a studio session.

I'm sure many of you know I am no fan of Sammy's, but Humans Being rocks really hard. Definitely one of very best Van Hagar tunes.

I thought I read in a Sammy interview that he and producer Bruce Fairbain wrote or revised some of the lyrics outside 5150 on the hood of his car. Have you heard the live version with Gary? It rocks harder than the original.
