Default Balance Tour Rig - Marshall heads

Anybody still have the old backstage pics from the Balance tour era that showed a couple of Marshall heads in an amp rack?

I havenít seen those pics in years and couldnít find them by searching. From what I remember, one of them looked to be a 2203.

A few of us were discussing this on a FB group. It started off as a discussion on the SLO100 that Ed used on the Unlawful era and then delved into the CAE 3+ preamp and modded Suhr Marshalls. Haha

I have been looking but I have not had any luck finding them. I know I have them somewhere in the massive amount of mags I have. I'll start checking my Young Guitar and Player Jap mags from 95 96

Weren't those Marshalls attributed to Sammy's guitar rig though?

I know people are fond of their tinfoil hats, but I truly think Eddie used his 5150s for every tour while he endorsed Peavey.

    you might be right Jedi....

I know Eddie used the Marshall for a few track on the Balance album but I know the PV5150s (combos stacked for clean sound and the head for dirty) were the live rig.

I know the pic he is talking about though so I will dig that up for sure.

I don't recall that photo, yet as mentioned above, I'd bet they were from Sam's rig. Also, Rob nailed it from what I read and saw back then, Eddie was using the Peavey combos for his clean sounds and the heads and stacks for his dirty.

Interesting that Sammy also played a Peavey combo (and red EBMM) when he performed High Hopes on the Letterman show.

Yup, that sounds spot on. IIRC he used the Marshall at least on Aftershock, but it was slaved with the 5150 too.

One of the most interesting things I've heard about Eddie and his amps was that all of ADKOT was recorded with the original Marshall, a 5150 II and a 5150 III at the same time. Most of what we hear is the 5150 III, but that means that somewhere out there is a hard drive with raw files for ADKOT including mixes where the Marshall is more prominent. That intrigues the hell out of me.

That would be cool to hear!
Especially since the mix and guitar tone on that album are two of the gripes many have with it...

I can say for a fact in 1998 Ed had a bunch of Peavey heads. I saw no Marshall anything. Boston show back when it was called the Fleet Center. Ed played the Purple Wolf he gave to Dave Friedman.

I have an Axis. Two Peavey 5150 half Stacks. An H9. And Boss DD-500 which has the Roland delay Ed uses it it . I accidentally discovered I have the Balnce tone listening to a recording with a band. If there were fewer mistakes Iíd share it here. Point is I was just saying the H9, EBMM guitar, and a 5150. Itís the effects and guitar that make it sound so cleanish. Least thatís what is happening with me right now. I always thought maybe he used a Marshall on Balance. Or blended the amps. If I can get that sound in a crappy rehearsal space with my gear I can see that maybe thatís all Ed Used? I know he said he used the Marshall on at least Aftershock so please donít try to school me.

And no I did not read the whole thread before posting. Sorry, but Iím in a rush today.

I assumed those were for Sammy too. Since it got brought up in the FB group though, it was nagging at me that I couldnít find the pics.

I remember John Shanks beginning to go into detail about it in a phone interview and those two butt heads interrupted him!!!1 GARH!

That's cool. Are you using the micropitch setting on the H9?
I think a decent stereo chorus (using two amps of course) will get you about 80% there. I stumbled across this setting a couple of years back using a Boss CE-5 Chorus Ensemble; the dirt is coming from a MXR 5150 pedal and there's a little plate reverb from a TC pedal:

If you hard study the Pensacola 95 show you will notice that theres many clean parts here and there that have a spankier/chruchier sound that is actually louder in the mix than the heavy driven sound. It's not that usual lowered volume knob sound I'm talking about. You can see and hear when Eddie switches that cleaner sound in and out. I believe that cleaner sound is the Marshall's (jcm 800's) in that rack. Watch "Take Me Back (Deja-Vu)" on YT from that show and you will know what I'm talking about.

I would bet that thatís the 5150 combos being switched in on the clean parts. Supposedly Peavey worked a lot harder to get more versatility out of the clean channel on the combo. They started work on it in late Ď93 and it was initially released to production in Jan Ď95. But Ed wanted to road test them and wanted some additional tweaks; they stopped production before the tour started to tweak the clean channel some more and it didnít go into production until June or July of Ď95.

Didn't he claim to use the combos for cleans? Before the 5150 II. Also clean tones/songs he was using guitars with Piezo pickups in the bridge on the Balance tour. You can clearly so two cables plugged into his guitars on clean songs.
VH III is Ed's solo album. So everybody who keeps saying they wish he'd do one needs to stfu and listen to III. Then stfu again.
