Warner Bros. Taps Walter Hamada to Oversee DC Films Production

As part of a shakeup of its DC film operations, Warner Bros. is promoting Walter Hamada to oversee its comic book movies, Variety has learned. He will serve as president of DC-based film production. In December, the studio decided to replace Jon Berg and Geoff Johns as the heads of the DC movies. Berg became a production partner with Roy Lee, the producer of “The Lego Movie” and “It,” who has a deal on the lot.

Johns remains at DC as a president and chief creative officer, but his portfolio doesn’t just involve film. He will continue to provide creative guidance into the company’s television and comic book efforts. An official announcement of Hamada’s hire, Warner Bros. said Johns will “work closely” with the new production president.

The move comes as DC is looking for more quality control of its big-screen efforts — the studio captured acclaim and box office bonanza with last summer’s “Wonder Woman,” but was savaged by critics for “Suicide Squad” and “Justice League.” There is widespread frustration over DC’s failure to match the popularity of Marvel movies.

Hamada previously served for a decade as a production executive at New Line, a division of Warner Bros. There, he helped shepherd such horror hits as “It,” “The Gallows,” and “The Conjuring” to cinemas. The executive enjoys a close relationship with director James Wan, who is directing “Aquaman” for DC, and is credited with helping expand “The Conjuring” universe by making a well-received sequel to the movie, as well as spinoffs with the “Annabelle” series. He will be leaving New Line to work for Warners, and will also oversee any other types of comic book movies that the studio produces outside of the DC canon.

Toby Emmerich, who was promoted in 2016 to president and chief content officer at Warner Bros., worked with Hamada at New Line, which he ran before moving over to the main studio.

“Walter is creative, resourceful, and committed to excellence, and will bring those qualities to his oversight of our superhero films,” said Emmerich in a statement.

Emmerich went on to add, “I’m confident Walter and Geoff, working with our filmmaking partners, will deliver films that will resonate with both broad global audiences as well as DC fanboys and fangirls.”

Last summer, Warner Bros. named Courtenay Valenti, best known for her work on the Harry Potter films, as president of production at Warner Bros. She will continue in that role, as will DC Entertainment chief Diane Nelson.

Before coming to New Line in 2007, Hamada spent four years as a partner in the management and production firm H2F Entertainment. He began his career as an assistant at TriStar and eventually became VP of production for Columbia Pictures. He also ran development for MBST Entertainment.

I hope, for WB/DC's sake, that Hamada is a fan first - then a businessman. That's why Kevin Feige is successful at Marvel, he lived and breathed those comics growing up.

So if I’m understanding one of the biggest complaints of the DC movies is their dark tones, overseriousness well and of course completing changing either who the characters are or their origin, and their solution is to bring in a guy doing horror movies

IT Producer Walter Hamada To Take Over DC Film Production

The second major production shakeup in as many years.

The DC Cinematic Universe is in, shall we say, a precarious position. Despite Wonder Woman knocking everybody’s socks off, Justice League landed with all the sound and fury of a jar of piss - and made about as much money as one, too, as far as giant superhero team-up movies go. Who would have thought It would outgross a movie with Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman and Steppenwolf in it?

Warner Bros. is clearly asking that question, too, as it’s promoting It producer Walter Hamada to serve as president of DC film production. Hamada will replace Jon Berg and Geoff Johns, who were themselves appointed to run the DC unit less than two years ago, although Johns will remain at DC working on its comic and TV output, while “work[ing] closely” with Hamada.

A look through Hamada’s back catalogue as producer doesn’t really scream “superheroes” or even “big-budget tentpoles.” It consists of mostly horror films, from the aforementioned It to several major studio horror remakes, all of which are relatively low-budget, which could signal a drop in budgets on future DC projects. However, Hamada's CV also includes the Conjuring series, arguably one of the more successful shared universes in cinema - and whose expansion into a franchise is supposedly largely Hamada’s doing. That he’s already worked heavily with Aquaman director James Wan can’t hurt, either. If that movie hits as hard as Jason Momoa's body, perhaps Wan will be offered a greater foothold in the franchise. Or perhaps not! Who knows, in this topsy-turvy world.

Ultimately, it’s hard to look at Hamada’s hiring and not see Warner Bros panicking. It feels like this messy franchise gets new overseers with every new major entry, and with the exception of Wonder Woman (and elements of Suicide Squad, if not the movie as a whole), none of the films have captured the public’s imagination. DC is in major need of a hit, and it’s currently lacking a clear creative vision to make that happen. Will this shakeup be the one it needs to get back on track?

I'd like to see WB/DC Films get the right people running it to start. Get directors with a clear vision for their movie that fits the character and let them make the movie. People in a board room should not dictate these things. They are only seeing $-signs. Wonder Woman was great, remind me of Reeve era Superman. JL was a glorified tv movie. It had good and bad points. I'm hoping for another Man of Steel movie with the Superman we saw in JL.

Therein lies the problem fir DC, people who don’t know or don’t care about the Characters coming in like a wrecking ball and destroying them. I still can believe in this day and age that you fuck up a Superman reboot, double your fuckup with BvS, both of those movies should have walked to a billion dollars without even blinking and should have been softball lobs to fun enjoyable movies, how you scream them up is beyond retarded
Personally I liked Justice League and loved Wonder Woman, but damn these are icons with so many stories you hardly even need to write a script

Well said...I can understand showing Superman's growth as hero, but I was tired of seeing him get his ass handed to him. The JL movie gave us the Superman we were missing. Superman going dark and brooding like Batman does not work. WB/DC have to get people on board who know the material and respect it. A boardroom cannot make this work. I'm still trying to understand how someone can sign off on the CGI of Cavil's face. A relative of mine works for an effects house and told me they could have done way better on their own home PC's than what WB came up with.

Why would you get rid of the employee's if your still making a profit?

If anything the entire industry will just start playing it safe with lower budgets for comic book movies,you can bank on that.

Because they aren’t making the expected profit. Superman and Batman fighting each other should have been a billion, they don’t look at it as making 100 mill, they look at it as losing 250 mil

It’s like in the movie Casino, a guy that is short betting from his usual bet and winning doesn’t think great I’m winning 10k a hand when his usual bet would win 100k, he looks at it as losing 90k

Green Lantern as a movie flopped,but in selling a half a million of mechandise alone on the opening weekend,they must've been laughing all the way to the bank.
I'm sure if they're not happy with the movie division they can always replace the COO.

They lost their shirt on the movie, and studios don’t get much in merchandising, roughly on average .09 cents fir every dollar sold, and I must have missed the Star Wars size push on Green Lantern merch

BvS was 250 million short
Justice League was 300 million short
Wonder Woman was 100 mil over

So they were more than half billion short of projections

I don’t know what their merch deal is, what I do know is Hasbro owns the rights to all of it and their stock has doubled over the last 3 years
Disney stick is up 25 % over the last three years
Warner stick is down 15%

With those kind of results, people are going to get fired and rightfully so, they just have to hope they can course correct are start making some money

Last year was the second time in WB movie history to make over 5 billion dollars,things can't all be that bad.
Read an article about that money they made with the GL merchandise.
