I guess it's easy to say that after the fact. I have a feeling that, going forward, any similar incidents like this will most certainly require such actions by school officials.

I thought it was interesting that the parents resisted bringing him home after the meeting. I would like a little more info on that claim.

It's been interesting how many lockdowns there were across the nation after this. Lot of phony threats being called in to schools. Lot of douchebags out there. I hope their penalties get a bit stiffer now.
Law enforcement might be able to sell me on negligence that crosses into criminal territory, unless the evidence gets a lot stronger. At this point, saying they caused the deaths, even if they didnít mean to, is a bit strong, IMO.

Considering schools have metal detectors and Iíve seen backpacks get searched when another student says someone is carrying drugs or a gun, the idea that didnít happen is negligent by the school.

If I havenít yet said this, the few things Iíve heard scream to me like a kid grappling with the compulsion to kill and heís having trouble dealing with it.

Weíve studied adolescent brains and they continue to mature into their 20s. A brain at 15 is structurally different than an adult and reacts differently to stimuli. Adolescent brains, by no fault of the child, are much more likely to engage in risky and impulsive decision making, experience mood swings, and have reactions that are out of proportion to the situation. Their behaviors are also much more likely to be changed and this rehabilitated. This doesnít mean not holding them responsible, but taking this into account in the punishment phase.

As youíve noted, itís often much shorter sentences, though a judge can extend that. Either way, Iíd rather default at that first and then move to adult if it seems appropriate.

    Good post.

Obviously I'm, no doubt, with the majority of those finding it difficult to conjure up any sympathy for this kid and his under-developed brain. Yes, adolescents are typically more likely to engage in risky, impulsive behavior. But this wasn't a kid throwing eggs at cars or setting off the fire drill at school. Bringing a gun to school and firing it at classmates is such an extreme behavior, especially when it is premeditated. This was evil. And I'm pretty sure this kid knew that what he was doing was an ultimate crime.

Having said that, I agree with you that this kid seemed to be screaming out for help. If that's the case, another reason to come down hard on the parents. But that's for the investigation.

I've said before that I believe the charges against the parents do seem a bit excessive. Involuntary manslaughter? I'm not sure that'll stick. BUT, we'll have to see what evidence comes forward. There are certainly some indications that lean in that direction, but I'm not sure it holds up in court.

Default Today's mass shooting is brought to you by.......

The parents of the MI shooter hired a couple of high profile lawyers (Larry Nassarís attorney is one of em) to head up their defense while their son has to turn to a public defender because they didnít hire him an attorney.

What chance did he have with these two pieces of sub-human shit as parents?

Fuck him, but his parents should have gotten their own underage son representation before themselves.

I really hope these trials are televised. I cannot wait to hear the evidence they have against the parents.

Now, itís coming out as per the DA, this kid was ďseeing ghosts and demons in their Family home and became infatuated with Nazi propagandaĒ and he outlined exactly what he was going to do in his journal.

Parents thought a gun was the perfect gift for their son.

Also coming out that they drained Ethanís bank account while they were fleeing.

Honestly, the more I read and hear about this case, I feel for this kid. Heís not a monster. He was a truly fucked up child and he needed the two people most kids can depend upon the most to protect them(even from themselves) to step in. He needed help and those two black-holes for Parents he was being raised by basically ignored every sign that their son needed it. What chance does a kid in crisis have with these two sacks of shit for parents?

Iím also now fully of the belief that they knew exactly what he was going to do, and wanted him to do it. I think they knew he was being bullied and they got him that gun so that he could do exactly what he did.

Wouldnít be surprised to see the charges upgraded to voluntary manslaughter or even murder.
