This is about money as usual with Sam. The return of investment isn't great for Sam re CF who's already complained that he has to put those guys up...plain fares etc. Paraphrasing but he did say that.

He actually bitched about the last CF album not selling well.

Easier to be in a cover band.
But also easy to release new material when you're a band of multi-millionaires.

Has anybody heard Satriani's new album, "What Happens Next?" I have never bought a fully instrumental rock album, but I am intrigued by this based on positive reviews that I have read and the involvement of Chad.

I think there were three things that hurt the last CF record.
    1. Sam didn't support it. Say what you want, he didn't. I don't know why. Perhaps he was burnt out or having marital problems. Who knows.
    2. The PR machine was nothing like the first album.
    3. Chad not participating in the tour deflated the band, the tour and ultimately, record sales.

It takes money to make money. When you half ass it, it shows. And it did. The album was good, but the support wasn't.

Yep. CF was the ONLY Sam collaboration that I had even a remote interest in. Bought both CD's when they hit. The 2nd one, I'll admit, wasn't up to par with the first but "No Change" is one of the baddest jams I had heard in long time up to that point.

I guess I'm confused as to why Joe and Chad could get together eventually but not CF? Sam is putting way too much stock into The Circle.

Nothing to see here but Joe's yearly hope that it will happen. He's like a long-suffering fan of VH isn't he?

First it was "No Chad...no CF"

Now, I think the ship has sailed for Sam.

If that's so, I have no idea why he thinks that. He will tour much bigger with CF than with the Circle.

Looks like this summer they're gonna record some new songs, that's great, great news. Much better than Sam going back to VH (which won't happen anyways). Best possible news for Sam, who has written a couple of very good solo songs lately. Hopefully it could be the best CF album so far.

We know that but Sam doesn't seem to see the upside of it. I think he was really let down by the last album.

In Tahoe, he was pretty keyed up for them to reconvene and record, I can tell you that. Dunno what happened the last two years, but everything I've heard was it was all about Chad. So for Joe to say it's down to Sam is pretty strange, I think. Haven't a clue why Sammy would rather head to the Circle than CF, but it can't be a financial one nor a creative one, so maybe it's a chemistry issue with Joe or Chad. Hmm.

And especially given the fact, that Joe and Chad have recorded together recently.

Well I think it's a question of ego and pride. The debut sold rather well and set up a high water mark that they've had trouble matching. Sammy has had a lot of success in his professional life, if you look at his trajectory. He's not used to people saying he failed, so he feels he has more at stake. Even his TV show was renewed for 2 more seasons. His book was NY Time best seller. For the 3rd CF record, he doesn't want to do it unless he's sure it's going to be viewed as successful.
However this year, it seems the stars are aligning much better than the previous years in terms of schedule.

I dunno, I dont' think he looks at CF3 as a failure at all. The tour did great even without Chad no?

CF3 probably sold more than the Circle cd (but that was a live Circle album so does it even count?)

I wish they'd go in and crank out a raw unpolished heavy garage style album. I bet they could do it cheap too, that way when it doesn't sell, it won't sting as bad. Then go out on the road to make the money. win win for all.

It was a failure in Sam's eyes.

"I make kind of fun, easy things,” he said. “Chickenfoot records are difficult, because we’ve gotta get together, we write and we work, and we write and we work. And it’s really, really tough … I just did an acoustic record of a bunch of old songs … and it was fun, it was easy. I did it in a week. I like doing stuff like that.”

In last week’s interview with Rolling Stone, Hagar said, “I don’t see any reason to make a new record … I mean, I love making music. But doing it on Chickenfoot’s level means spending a half million on a record. We write and record for six months. It’s a lot of work, and then to not sell many records, it’s disappointing. I don’t like being disappointed. I like winning.”
