Its amazing that news networks went 100% all in on if a guy who said the N word at a baseball game (in which he was yelling at the mascot using his name) yet there is nothing about a person in a gorilla mask throwing an egg at Larry.

I don't care if the person is Democrat, Republican, Socialist, Athiest, Jewish, Christian, Muslim, etc if he or she is black and someobdy in a gorilla mask throws an egg, it probably has some racist overtones. Or at least treat them the same regardless of party.

The FDA would really rather people smoke than vape, yet we still trust them with safety.

I just came across this article in my local paper.

During WWII, getting the flu vaccine was patriotic. Some no longer view science that way.

I am really getting annoyed with the term “science” as if that hasn’t been politicized. Why not say “medicine”? Because by using the term science, they can use this same political, social pressure and tactic to go after climate change and a host of other big money power grabs of the political class have planned.

I get what you're saying, but everything is deemed such a slippery slope these days. So everything becomes bastardized. Even if the article said "medicine," I've a feeling it still wouldn't be good enough.

It's true that people back then took the vaccines and the medicine and everyone was better off. Nowadays it's a different story.

I'm not arguing your definition necessarily but science can't answer questions not having to do with material things, such as morality for example. Will science tell me if it's wrong to enslave people? No.

It's funny, I am by no means any kind of science expert, but I also didn't understand it until late in college in an upper division general ed course that was required. It made me realize how much time was wasted in school, all those science fairs, etc., when I didn't actually understand the fundamentals of how it works.

There is a version of science as religion, maybe even several versions. Michael Crichton succinctly explains this in some videos you can find on YouTube. His version was about the climate. A lot of climate "science" has morphed into the idea that the Earth was once a paradise, a Garden of Eden, and then man sinned/ruined it, and the only path now is salvation through sustainability. Despite the fact that, inherently, science is about asking questions and new information, there is no deviation from this. All you need to know is that the Pars Agreement = good and ideas by those like Bjorn Lomborg = bad to know that a lot of climate conversation has become immovable from a particular solution.

There are also misunderstandings about science and how our understanding changes, and that's true, though it is worth understanding why that is. It doesn't mean scientific consensus is without value and can't be believed, but we also cannot just say we've solved something when there is a consensus, either. Some of the greatest breakthroughs in history were due to people bucking the consensus.

The current climate is a great indication we have failed to give students a proper foundational understanding of science as they leave high school. But I kind of started to see this a few years ago when trying to explain the difference between facts and theories to one of my most intelligent friends. He couldn't get past the fact that an apple falling when you drop it is just an observable fact and is not proof of gravity. Newton and Einstein have theories that attempt to explain why the apple falls. To him, gravity was a fact, hand-in-hand with the apple falling. But I am sure he did great at the science fair in 3rd grade.

This is a fucking horrifying reality.

I really don’t think there is any comparison, but I don’t live in America.

I love science/ The concept of figuring out the unknown and making it konwn. Well at least until maybe another discovery makes it invalid. Maybe never. That said science is incorrect at times. Researchers are often publically or privately funded. Most universities require funding to do their research. Obviously pharm researches with their own earnings but at the end, they are interested in the bottom line. The squeaky wheel gets the grease. Like religion or education, the intent is good however like those two, it can become corrupt, political and self serving.

As I stated in the COVID thread I work in a global team and they are amazed at how politicized science is. Not the idea that Fauci is the devil and anti-vaxxers are inbred sheep. Just how our government ignores certain studies that are accepted over there. Example is antibodies. Its a no brainer over there yet here we only care about vaccine cards. They have antibody cards. They use them. UK for instance looks at data about kids and allow children to go masklesss. Here that is taboo iwth the "its science" They follow science/ We politicize it.

Not saying that science is always wrong or incorrect. Its like religion. To believe in it, is putting faith into it. Unless you are out in the field taking blood samples from people, measuring readings at a location, studying viri, etc you are taking what you read as the gospel truth. No different than a person who puts their faith in religion. You have to have faith that what you are reading is infallible, Absolute. Will never be incorrect. Unwilling to be compromised. LIke a religious person.

Now yes that faith is hopefully something tangible but at the end of it, you have to believe. You believed that the FDA is right with the vaccine. You have utmost trust and respect for the scientists who created it are on the up and up. They are not cutting corners, pushing something for dividends, or to get grants. Its for the betterment of humanity. Some view religion that way maybe more in intangible ways but still its faith

Look at what was said last year about COVID. 6 feet. No more. Wear gloves. No more. Wash produce. No more. Wash countertops. No more. Al that was stated as fact by science yet today, its incorrect. Oh yeah and masks were ineffective but now a thong is protection. Its based purely on faith that what one is telling you is the truth.

Not saying its not the truth. However the belief system is very similar and you can certainly see it 18 months later. The demonization of people because they don't subscribe to the new religion. Instead of saying you are damned due to your sex, its based on a shot.

At least here in America. Sounds like Europe is a bit more civilized
