Fair Warning and 1984 : the two greatest performance from Ed on the first era. Mean street and Girl Gone bad are probably the pinnacle of his virtuosity.
The only album as ambitious will be Van Halen 3.

I would say the entire 6-pack was the pinnacle. I don't think you could accurately make that statement and not include the debut.

This. Nor could VHII or WACF be excluded IMO.

I get FW. I really do but how anyone can rank the debut behind FW is a head scratcher to me. You don't have the brown sound or tone without the first album.

The debut IS the tone. It set the stage for everything that came after.

I think it is fatigue from hearing it on the radio for forty plus years.

If any of us were to hear the VH catalog for the first time, I think we would be hard pressed not to say "yeah, that first one is the tits".
If I don't respond to you it means I have you on ignore, which means you are a douchenozzle.

Agree but we've also heard FW for 40 years this year too.

Fair Warning doesn't get near the radio exposure that Van Halen does - maybe "Unchained", but that's about it.

This. Not 40 years for me, but I get the point.

Thereís about 4-5 songs from the first album where if I never heard em again, Iíd be more than fine with it.

FW or WACF over the debut album, any day of the week and twice on Sunday.

Fair Warning didn't get much radio exposure when it was released back in 1981. It is an awesome album, but the lack of commercial success when compared to the debut, VH II and WACF was a huge reason we got the much more mainstream Diver Down and 1984 afterwards.

For me, the sound of the drums just isn't as good as VHII, WACF, FW, or 1984.

And as far as the brown sound, yes the debut set the template, but that doesn't mean it was the best. One of the many great things about both Ed and Al is they never kept the same sound for two albums. I can see where people would love the debut guitar tone the best, but WACF will always be my favorite guitar tone and drum tones, followed by FW for both.

Then the songwriting got more diverse on both WACF and FW too.

Time has shown that the debut has the most iconic and enduring songs. Runnin' With The Devil, Eruption, You Really Got Me, Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love. And those are just the first 4 songs on side one.
