Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem’s bag, including $3,000 in cash, is stolen from DC restaurant

Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem fell victim to a thief while eating dinner at a downtown Washington, DC, restaurant Sunday night, the secretary confirmed Monday.

Noem, who was asked about the theft at the White House Easter Egg Roll, acknowledged the incident and said the matter has not been resolved.

The Secret Service, which provides security for Noem, reviewed security camera footage at the Capital Burger restaurant and saw an unknown white male wearing a medical mask steal her bag and leave the restaurant, a law enforcement source said.

The thief got away with Noem’s driver’s license, medication, apartment keys, passport, DHS access badge, makeup bag, blank checks, and about $3,000 in cash.

The Secret Service has launched an investigation to trace any use of Noem’s financial instruments, the person added.

“Her entire family was in town including her children and grandchildren – she was using the withdrawal to treat her family to dinner, activities, and Easter gifts,” a DHS spokesperson said.

This kinda crap can happen to anyone and has happened to many politicians and celebs. Aside from being a bit careless with her purse and belongings, it's not Hegseth level buffoonery. Doesn't she have a secret service detail personally keeping an eye out on her in public? You'd think they'd be on the thief like a fly on shit. It'd be kinda funny if it was some undocumented waiter who stole her purse.

I mean, regarding Noem, it sounds like a security failure if it's true that it was right under her Secret Service detail's nose. The guy was able to sit next to her and slide her purse over with his foot. Unless we are saying that we just expect Secret Service to be foiled by people at eateries wearing N95 masks.

Also worth pointing out that carrying that much cash is considered by the federal government and DHS to be suspicious, at best, and is oft cited as actual evidence of wrongdoing, in and of itself. (I am not saying she was doing anything wrong, just that average people carrying that much money get screwed even if they have proof it's not for nefarious purposes.)

And rightly so because it was in The White House, but this is different. These guys are attacking the woman for getting robbed by a masked man. It’s ridiculous. The other thing is questioning why she had 3 grand in her purse when she’s was taking her family out for dinner.

I know all they care about is taking shots, but this is beyond silly.

I think it's clear that if Mayorkas had been robbed, at dinner, of thousands of dollars in cash, passport, DHS security credentials, etc., despite having a Secret Service detail that "would have included agents with her motorcade, shift agents posted around the restaurant, and a site agent who secured the space ahead of time," even if "it is common for protectees to ask their agents to keep a lower profile at private family outings than they would at official events," by a guy at the next table wearing an N95, MAGA would, in no way, be brushing this off as 'nothing.'

I don't know that I would as far as embarrassment (at least this particular case for this administration), per se, but it certainly is worrisome a security lapse worthy of asking questions.

IMF forecasts U.S. fiscal deficit will dip in 2025 thanks to higher tariff revenue

The International Monetary Fund forecasts U.S. tariffs will help lower the country’s fiscal deficit a touch in 2025 even as the U.S. growth and inflation outlooks worsen thanks to an intensifying trade war.

The 191-nation’s Fiscal Monitor report released Wednesday projects the U.S.’s overall federal deficit will fall to 6.5% of gross domestic product this year, down from 7.3% in 2024.

The narrower gap between spending and revenue is “contingent on higher tariff revenues,” according to the report.

The level was calculated based on the IMF’s “reference point” forecasts, which account for tariff announcements made as of April 4. This includes the U.S.’s reciprocal tariffs announced on April 2, but excludes subsequent rollouts such as the 90-day pause on higher rates and the exemption on smartphones, semiconductors and other technology goods.

Against this backdrop, the deficit is estimated to fall to 5.6% of GDP in the medium term as revenues rise 0.7%, according to the IMF.

Uncertain revenue

To be sure, the report noted “the magnitude of the tariff revenue increase is highly uncertain.”

One of the caveats to the reduced deficit projection is the degree to which tariffs will put downward pressure on imports into the U.S., itself dependent largely on how consumers respond to higher prices. This varies widely across products, the report noted.

Moreover, “the tariff schedule itself is uncertain and plays a crucial role,” the report continued.

The IMF acknowledged another risk to its forecast: whether tariffs lead to a wider slowdown in economic activity that could lead to a downturn in other segments of tax revenue — such as income tax — that offset higher revenues from tariffs.

“These projections are highly uncertain and do not account for measures under discussion in Congress, under budget reconciliation” negotiations, the fund said.

Yields on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note have surged in recent weeks, last trading near 4.40%, as higher tariffs were announced, inflation forecasts raised and as the dollar declined.

If the total size of U.S. government debt continues to surge, the IMF thinks it will push up longer-term interest rates and the cost of financing the debt.

“Specifically, an increase of 10 percentage points of GDP in U.S. public debt between 2024 and 2029 could lead to a 60-basis-point rise in the 5-year forward to 10-year rate,” the IMF staff wrote. One basis point equals 1/100th of a percent, or 0.01.

Well, here we are. The Republicans, seemingly, are touting a dent in the deficit due to a not-seen-in-a-century tax increase, one that the IMF also says will negatively affect both the US and global economies.

"A series of new tariff measures by the United States and countermeasures by its trading partners have been announced and implemented, ending up in near-universal US tariffs on April 2 and bringing effective tariff rates to levels not seen in a century. This on its own is a major negative shock to growth," not to mention "the unpredictability with which these measures have been unfolding."

"Global growth is projected to drop to 2.8 percent in 2025 and 3 percent in 2026." (In January, the WEO predicted 3.3 percent growth each year.) This change is "a cumulative downgrade of 0.8 percentage point, and much below the historical (2000–19) average of 3.7 percent."

"Growth in the United States is expected to slow to 1.8 percent, a pace that is 0.9 percentage point lower" than their January prediction.

Odds of a recession, as predicted in October 2024 were 25% and they now put those odds at 37%.

As far as inflation, "For advanced economies, the inflation forecast for 2025 has been revised upward by 0.4 percentage point since January," and for the US, "inflation forecast has been revised upward…by 1.0 percentage point….This reflects stubborn price dynamics in the services sector as well as a recent uptick in the growth of the price of core goods (excluding food and energy) and the supply shock from recent tariffs."

Inflation in the US will rise 3% and chances it gets to 3.5% have more than doubled from October.
