At the time the Constitution was written, it was understood officials could be impeached even after holding office. Several state constitutions gave explicit permission and no state constitutions specifically forbid it. The architects of the document understood this and did not specifically outlaw impeachments after leaving office.

In 1876, the Secretary of War was impeached by the House even after resigning. He was not convicted (in part over some Senators wondering if they had the power). The House practices manual assumes former officials can be impeached.

Brian Kalt has the most comprehensive assessment of this question and he says it can be done (https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers....ract_id=286277).

And when it came to Obama, the GOP thought differently about a year ago. (See below)

I guess the GOP must think a President lying under oath is worse than inciting a violent attack to overthrow an election and steal the office back.

Trump was wrong but he didn't force those people to commit the actions they did on the capital on 1/6. They were just words. So impeaching him is only being used as a weapon by the Dems so he doesn't run for POTUS ever again. I really hope he doesn't run again after 1/6 but he should be allowed to run for POTUS in 2024 if he wants it's a free country. The Dems though want to stop him from doing so. It's sad what happened but those people should be held responsible for their own actions. It's like people that listen to music and go and commit criminal acts, it's a form of expression. Trump got so caught up with all his crap he's eating his words now but it's a free country. Impeaching him for words is nonsense and if it actually goes through it's going to further divide the country. he got banned from Twitter, Facebook. Let him eat his own words but again it boils down to those people that stormed the capital on 1/6, no one forced them to. Trump has to live with it now, let him live with it. Anyone with a heart would feel like a total douche.

I wouldn't believe much of anything those fools say as they will try anything to get out of trouble. Never once did Trump directly say to storm the capitol building. The rally protest outside was peaceful, those that went inside were not. Trump should have condemned the rioters immediately, but did not. That whole thing inside the capitol was a bad situation, but adults need to be responsible for their own actions. Blaming what they did on anyone but themselves is pussy.

Don't get me wrong, I don't believe what any of those fools say...Trump included. Of course it's their only avenue of defense. I just find it comical that they're kind of disrupting Trump's defense with their own.

And let's not forget, some were saying they were following Trump's orders WHILE storming the Capitol.

But, in the end, it won't matter. ALL should be held accountable. One of them won't.
