We need to restore Civics classes to schools.

Modern Civics, not the I'm just a bill I'm only a bill and sitting here on Capital Hill" kind of Civics...although how government functions IS important.

I'm talking about reading and discussion of the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, Federalist Papers then on to important documents, speeches and laws that have shaped our government and society such as the Emancipation Proclamation, Gettysburg Address.

And we should teach the civics in a warts and all framework. How we dealt with native populations, Immigration and how it build this country and how it failed. Women's rights, Minority rights, and the entire Civil War


We need to teach beyond the "MY RIGHTS as an American thing...which hasn't been taught well enough because the whole mask situation has showed us that we don't have a real grip on what Civil Rights really are

We need to teach what my RESPONSIBILITIES are as an American and teach students to understand the unique nature of our country and our place in the world

We have 2 years of science, 4 years of math, 4 years of English, yet kids aren’t learning how to read even to an 8th grade level, how to do fractions, or how the scientific method works.

I understand your point, but increasing civics itself won’t yield results, especially if they cannot read the textbook or Constitution.

In theory, I do agree that “government,” what we call civics in CA, should be more than a semester class.

But our problems run much, much deeper.

What we REALLY need is for parents to stop worrying about trying to be their kids' friends and teach them about personal responsibility and accountability.

What we REALLY need is for parents to stop worrying about trying to be their kids' friends and teach them about personal responsibility and accountability.

Sadly it's the parents who usually need that lesson.
