One, the Stop WOKE Act. It's been blocked by federal courts twice, and rightly so, which went so far as to regulate the speech of college professors and private business. Another, S.B. 7072, forces private entities to allow speech on their property that they do not agree with. H.B. 1557, colloquially referred to as the "Don't Say Gay" law, has had many critics go overboard, which hurts the cause of people with less outrage-based critiques. In no way do I think we should teach sex ed to Kindergarteners (already illegal in FL). But the language is extremely vague, which is a problem. It's sold as a parental rights bill, but it actually empowers unelected bureaucrats to set standards, not parents. The intention of this paragraph:
A parent of a student may bring an action against a school district to obtain a declaratory judgment that a school district procedure or practice violates this paragraph and seek injunctive relief. A court may award damages and shall award reasonable attorney fees and court costs to a parent who receives declaratory or injunctive relief.
is to allow culture war lawsuits by organizations using parents as surrogates. Because there is no definition of what is appropriate, it puts schools on the defensive for any possible discussion/lesson/event that a parent could sue over. It's what I would call "soft" censorship. Since just about anything could be a reason to sue, you silence conversations out of fear of lawsuits. We have already seen this play out with laws about critical race theory in schools and plain old Black history being called "critical race theory" to keep it from being taught. Authorizing parental lawsuits shows it isn't about setting appropriate boundaries. It doesn't have parents give input on appropriateness, of which there would be varying degress. Instead, it authorizes the most conservative parents to silence discussions other parents actually may want.
Those are just the major ones I know about. Then there is threatening Disney for exercising its speech rights. It turns out, what is likely going to happen, is they are going to replace Disney's deal with a new version that is cosmetically different, but functionally identical, so DeSantis gets a political win and business as usual continues around Disney World. But it still could change and government shouldn't punish speech it disagrees with. Finally, there is using Florida money to fly asylum seekers from Texas to Martha's Vineyard under false pretenses/flat out lies. Government shouldn't be using the weakest among us as political pawns for showboating.
At the same time, he is better than Trump for several reasons, and Florida is doing well. So he is a mixed bag. But the speech stuff is fairly chilling.
BTW, DeSantis isn't alone on this. NY has a new, awful speech law, targeting speech the state dislikes, even if protected speech. That's pretty bad.Last edited by lovemachine97(Version 2); 12.01.22 at 02:07 PM.

Welp, Nick Fuentes may not be the most problematic part of that dinner at Mar a lago, now. Kanye and Fuentes were on Alex Jones' show today.
Kanye said, "I see good things about Hitler .... Every human being has something of value that they brought to the table, especially Hitler." Jones replies that the Nazis were thugs. Kanye retorted, "But they did good things too. We gotta stop dissing the Nazis all the time."
Later, Kanye said, "I love Jewish people. But I also love Nazis."
Jones tries to help Kanye and gives him a chance to say he actually doens't love Hitler. Kanye says, "There's a lot of things that I love about Hitler. A lot of things."

Kanye is mentally ill.
He might be a racist, but to go around saying what he says, the cheese is off the cracker.
If I don't respond to you it means I have you on ignore, which means you are a douchenozzle.

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

The stupidity of some people still astounds me.
"It's so lonely at the top because it's so crowded at the bottom" - Diamond David Lee Roth
"The truth sounds like hate to those who hate the truth" - Todd Wagner

I changed grocery stores for most stuff a few months back. Going to a no frills place (that's actually the name). I was ok spending a bit extra, but the place we used to go to seemed to be...
