Well, stick a fork in CF .. apparently they're done

Joe Satriani just took part in a partial Chickenfoot reunion as part of Sammy Hagar‘s Acoustic-4-A-Cure concert, but he doesn’t see it leading to bigger things for the supergroup. During a revealing new talk with Ultimate Classic Rock, Satriani intimates that he just might be looking for collaborators with less on their plates these days.
Satriani notes that Chickenfoot drummer Chad Smith also showed up at the benefit concert. ”So there was the three of us – the three ‘Footers where there, the gentlemen of the ‘Foot hanging out,” he tells Ultimate Classic Rock’s Matt Wardlaw. “But I get the distinct feeling [a new album is] just not going to happen. For reasons that are too boring to go into, I’ve kind of giving up trying to be the instigator, of trying to get another record done.”
Chickenfoot last put out an album of original material in 2011. In the meantime, Satriani has openly called for a long-hoped-for reunion, but to no avail. The guitarist is now set to release his second solo album since Chickenfoot III arrived, and songs he said were originally earmarked for the next Chickenfoot project have become part of a new animated series. He’d composed those tracks in a flurry, after a period in which Satriani was down with the H1N1 virus.
“I recorded all of the demos for a new record, and I really just couldn’t get people motivated to get going with it,” Satriani says. “So, that music has moved on. At the end of the benefit, although it was one of those fun things with being up there with Sammy and Chad again, I just got the feeling that they’re not thinking it’s in the cards. So, I’m actually looking forward to maybe finding another band to collaborate with. I started thinking, ‘You know, that’s what I should really do. I should move on.’”
Satriani is quick to note, however, that he hasn’t closed the door on Chickenfoot. “If the guys want to do something, I’m always ready for it,” he says. “I love Chickenfoot, and I think it’s one of the coolest things that’s ever happened – to all of us. I’m a bit heartbroken that we weren’t able to work on a couple more albums, and tour. That would have been really great. But you’ve got to move on. That’s reality. Those guys have other things to do that are important to them. So, I respect it.”

    Meh...

Sam shot himself in the 'Foot' by insisting "no Chad...no band".

He'll get bored of The Circle too. The moment Bonham is unavailable...

He needs to stop this. Sam parties with these musicians, gets a boner, and wants to start a band.

Just Wabo it from here out...

Yeah, I love Chad Smith as much as anyone but if he's adamant about the Red Hot Chili Peppers being full-time all the time, then I don't understand why The Circle isn't Chickenfoot. Bonham would be way more than an acceptable drummer with the chops (moreso than Aronoff) to not only takeover the stool and skins for Chickenfoot but perhaps—dare I say it—make them better. Sammy once compared Chickenfoot to Zeppelin—well... put your money where your mouth is. I for one would love to hear Bonham's thick, groove-driven drumming behind Sammy, Joe, and Mikey.

Sadly, I think what it really comes down to is that Sammy likes The Circle because they are basically a cover band without original material so it's easier to sell tickets by playing his Montrose, Van Halen, Zeppelin, and solo songs. I think he has truly settled in to retirement and the idea of working hard to create not only original material but market it to sell tickets for the sake of touring is just more effort than he wants to put in at this point. And, if I was nearing 70 with $80+ million in the bank I can't say that I blame him.

Would love to see Joe in another band setting. Hope he finds some folks to rock out with. Of course if and when he does... Hagar will come calling and say he's ready to do CF again. Sam can be such a tool.

He's got nothing left to prove, and hasn't for quite a while now...
I did think that he'd keep going a bit longer with CF. Sorry for those fans who wanted to see it continue with more certainty.

I think Sam really had a hard time putting lyrics together for III. I don't know if he was simply in a bad spot or maybe he felt that expectations was set too high for his lyrics to fit the music. Perhaps that's why there hasn't been more CF. Maybe they'll take one-off events like this one and record a song or two and eventually surprise us with a new album.

I would agree that he's earned the right to kick back and relax. I know we don't want to hear that or admit to it. Perhaps because we all want to hang on to our youth. Perhaps because we all realize we're not that far behind him.

At this point, we need to realize that anything he does is a "gift". We're lucky to have new music, or old music rehashed. For now, we'll all just have to sit back and enjoy The Circle.

The problem isn't that "he's earned the right" imo. It's that he starts these new bands...we get used to them...and then he "moves on".

He's never satisfied, I guess. One of the things I respect about the VH Bros, they look at each other as the best....they don't look at anybody else, to get them pumped.

Glad I got to see the Foot twice once in Vegas. The Vegas show was also when the Cabo Wabo opened in Vegas it was an awesome 3 days. We met Mike in the lobby at the Hardrock and took in a Morrrisey show and then met him in the casino. A musician friend who went with me and has since passed away from cancer told me it was the best time he ever had with his clothes on lol.

Well why doesn't sammy tell joe...it's not happening and move on. Joe sounds really down about it. I'm really confused as to what sammy is doing these days. If he's gonna ride out his retirement.. just get a band and play sammys songs. Id die to hear returning home , or when the hammer falls live instead of led zep songs.

Damn, that sucks. I was just listening to their first album the other day. They're so great as a group it's a shame they can't find a way to work together again.

I 1000 plus % agree with you on this. It would have been an easy fix to just slide Bonham in. In the recent "Circle" interview Jason kinda alluded to something about him not knowing at what capacity he would be playing with Sam in and mentioned he was in good Company with the other list of drummers Sam has played with. I always got the feeling that Sam decided to make it policy that Chicken foot would have no other drummer because of the shit he accused Van Halen of saying "You can't be in two bands!"

A sad day if the foot has faded away....
