RWTD, Panama, Unchained, DTNA, etc. all have those familiar chordal pieces. Ed even used those same 'tools' on his keyboard pieces like Jump, I'll Wait, Love Walks In, Right Now, etc.
All part of the genius of Ed's songwriting IMO, when you see how basic the forms are, but how exciting and different all those tunes^^^ turned out to be
Yes, the chordal pieces are familiar, but I think what the OP meant was that these two songs are identical in their intro portion. Just different timing.

I pictured Jas thinking, "What is this? a song for the new Beverly Hills cop movie?"

But, fuck me, Edward was correct.
    It became a huge hit.

But it sounds kinda dated on that audio, even in 1982.
    It's very much of it's time, sound-wise.

"So this is love?" had that trademark progression thing, as well.
Ed could take those same progressions & make them, somehow, sound completely fresh.

Also "Little Guitars" and "Secrets" have the same chordal ideas & shapes, which Dweezil
later adopted for his song, Loser.

Yeah, that was kind of my point as well. Triads (for all intents, as some lines have the bass or root note in the line) which are similar in a variety of songs. The key (so to speak!) of Edward's brilliant songwriting prowess... Making familiar chords into songs that are vastly different.

I wish Jeff would get back to posting a few more of the tracks he has access to from The Wild Life. I'm pretty sure the last one he posted he said he still has more. And he's never posted good, clean versions of "Ripley" or "Donut City." The ones I find on your tube are OK but I want a real good clean copy like I'm sure Jeff has…..

    Question:

What do you think was the inspiration for "Jump" and all these similar pop 'Jump'-sounding instrumentals?

The rock stuff has its obvious roots... but this keyboard side of EVH, hmmm:
    Where did it come from?

"Sunday Afternoon In The Park" didn't foreshadow anything like this... in fact, it clearly sounds more like a guitar riff (being monophonic and all.)

    Cheers for your thoughts,

It sounds like the audio track from an Atari 2600 game. EVH gets more sounds out of an MXR Flanger than anybody in the universe.

Eddie is a master at using his effects board!

well i'd say it would've been due to a lotta the new wave stuff happening (Devo, etc.) at the time possibly having some kind of influence for making Ed mess around with a synth more to see what he could do with it. But Ed famously (so he says) didn't really listen to other stuff much so that would blow my theory.

I think he always had those types of melodies and pop sensibilities in him, yet didn't always show it in the early VH days. Perhaps looking for the right outlet/opportunity?
He was reported to be very 'long form' and complicated too. We've all heard the "keyboards vs guitar hero" quote that Dave made, but you can't put those kinds of limitations on a musician like Eddie.

Having his own studio, and then the offer to score an 80's style film, just gave him the freedom and canvass to create what he wanted. We've seen what he wanted...
I like those Wild Life tracks!!!

    It's dated.

Na, like jape said, the terrible sound thru the phone makes it sound like that. If it were clear I don't think it would be that bad. It's actually pretty cool. Has a dark side too it. I woulda liked this more as an instrumental, compared to what it became.
