Live or on the album, when you compare Van Halen to Chickenfoot, one thing is obvious: Ed just writes great songs. Anything new on ADKOT (Presumably, China Town, As Is, Honeybabysweetiedoll, Trouble with Never) blows away anything by Chickenfoot 6-days a week and twice on Sunday. As I have said many times before, the only exception is Future In The Past, which is just an epic tune.

I enjoy the shit out of Chickenfoot. Sam can still whale when he is singing live. Mikey sounds great too. Chad and Joe are top notch. Comparing that group to either the Dave or Sammy incarnation of Van Halen just isn't fair. It's not on the same field...hell it's not even the same sport. Sammy knows it, and it is why he quietly put Chickenfoot to sleep.

I thought the questions were specific to the rhythm section of each live effort.

You are right...but I thought it was comparing the live releases as well...and I'm merely pointing out that I don't think there is any comparison...I respect the question, but that was just my round about way of answering it...

Cool. I guess I can't automatically concede that Al and Wolf are better then Chad and Mike, live or on each respective live album.

Hmmm, no. I don't think "As Is" is better than "Avenida Revolution." I prefer the latter. I think the number of good songs on each effort is pretty similar.
But for me, the CF records, taken as whole records, are superior to ADKOT. Because of one factor, vocals. I prefer my vocals professionally sung. Roth is straining too much. I also think Roth squandered his lyric-writing advantage by talking about Tattoos and facebook pages.
Also I don't think Al and Wolf make a rhythm section per se, since Wolf plays bass like a guitar player. So I put CF ahead of this VH, "Van Wolf" so to speak. Not ahead of VH 1978-1996.

One thing missed in this rhythm section conversation is EVH himself. He is such a great rhythm guitarist he has to be taken into consideration when you talk about rhythm section of VH and songwriting, spectacular.

I am a bass player too and I like both Mike and Wolf however Mike is the most traditional of the two....

Rhythm sections refers to the bass player and drummer. EVH is a great rhythm player, no doubt. But they decided to put Alex way in the back on ADKOT, so the awesome Al-Ed interplay present on every other record is less evident. Instead you can hear Wolf noodling.
    I prefer CF.
But let me just insist on one thing. Above all, I prefer ADKOT and CF I&III to what we're likely to get in the next few years from these guys: silence.

If I had to choose, I would rather be in a band with Chad and Mike, but Al and Wolf is a damn good fallback.

All four of them are monster musicians, you can't wrong with any of them, it just comes down to playing style preference.

To say one is better than the other is splitting hairs.

    Al/Wolf over Chad/Mike easily.

Al/Mike over Chad/Mike just as easily.

    Can't believe it's even a question lol.

And I guess I'll never understand this notion that you can't hear Al on ADKOT. Makes me wonder what shitty sound systems people are listening to. Yes, I wish the drums were more out front like the BOV1 tracks, but it's still Al and his playing on ADKOT is fantastic, and can still be heard.

I'd rather play with Mike and Chad anyday over Wolf and anyone. I don't like Wolf's style of bass playing. He's a guitarist playing bass. Mike is a bass player. There is a difference.

I think Wolf's playing style is very well suited for that stuff he is playing with Tremonti.

Just out of curiosity, what do you think of Duff McKagan? He was a guitar player that switched to bass pretty late, but I think he plays with a helluva groove.

Damn Brett, Lowtide's new album isn't quite as heavy as your last one.
