    Haha!

I've heard my share of Sam's music over the years. I can describe Sam's output in three words. Hit and Miss.

Sam seems to think more, in terms of quantity than quality imo.

When he's creating with people who are his equal or more talented...he brings it.

    Montrose...Van Halen...Chickenfoot.

    He shined.

    Solo and in charge? Meh.

Both Sammy and Eddie are good at one thing. Choosing the path of least resistance. They both have opportunities presented to them that are challenging. Sammy has to make CF work with various scheduling issues. Eddie is trapped by the confines of "Van Halen" and has to work with Dave because of this.

They both want to make new music but its going to be tough sledding. Instead of pushing through, they are content on being a greatest hits band. They also can satisfy their need by issuing solo albums or using their son. Not the same but it gets the job done.

The one I want to kick in the nuts is Mike. Guy is too good to be playing in Sammy's greatest hits band. He is too good to be looking to his left and seeing Vic Johnson. He should call up George Lynch, Nuno, Gilbert, Lukather, Sheenan, Kotzen, etc and say "hey lets do something. Sammy is done with CF and I got some ideas"

Instead we get to see him playing in a fair band.

George Lynch & Michael Sweet just released a new project. Maybe Mike should attach himself to a project like that...
“And what we have at our fingertips is arguably one of the greatest high tenor voices ever – that was in Michael Anthony. In our tiny little corner of the universe, that voice is as identifiable as the high voice in Earth, Wind & Fire, as identifiable as the high voice in the Beach Boys. Van Halen is an indelicate house blend of both – that’s intentionally. So I would always look forward to that reunion.” - David Lee Roth

This Lynch and Sweet record sucks donkey balls. Glad Mike is not involved. The KXM record was way better.
Mike played on 13 studio albums, by and large excellent. Pretty good legacy, IMO.

Yeah my friend was all over the Sweet Lynch album and told me to get it. Liked maybe two songs. That said, I am not a fan of Sweet's voice. Reminds me of being a poor mans Dennis DeYoung.

Anyway just wish that Mike could step out from Sammy's shadow. Especially since it appears Sammy wants to turn it down a notch or seven.

Psycho Vertigo came on the Ipod on the way home from work.

That got me thinking- perhaps we've been over thinking this?

After all, Montrose, HSAS, Planet Us, Van "Hagar" and apparently the Wabos along with Chickenfoot have all gone by the wayside.

Did they outlast their usefulness to Sam?

We've all heard about the whole Sam and Ed thing ad nauseam and don't need to rehash that. I'm talking on a bigger, more broad scale than that.

I think it's more like a been-there-done-that attitude that I think he has nowadays. He has nothing to prove to anybody. He was literally on the top of the world for a long time. Why go back and try to do some more Montrose-style songs, or some more CF? People will always compare the music, the sales, etc. to back-in-the-day Sam.

And surely he does not have the energy or feels the need to put up with that. I don't think I would in his age. Sad for us, but I think he just does not want to commit to any larger project anymore. We will see short projects coming and going (if we are lucky). But I think things will dwindle down further for us fans.

I think age has part to do with it. I also think that he has finally come to terms that Sam as an artist with something to say doesn't resonate the way he thinks it should. When he puts out something it won't be received as well as his earlier solo stuff or Van Halen. He like Eddie are forever tied together and forever living on past glories.

Touring is fun for him but he just can't sustain it. Sitting in a studio arguing or compromising on ideas or schedules isn't.

So he is going to be a greatest hits band. That is fine. He deserves time to chill. I mean I don't expect a guy in his 60's to put out material that equals to what he was when he was in his 20's or 30's. Nobody does that.

Great point Ziggy. A human voice ages too just like our body. Like we are seeing with DLR. But with Al and Ed its freaking amazing how they still sound stellar in their 60s on their instruments.

I think I may mentioned this before, but I really think Sammy and Mike should merge with Jimmy Page and Jason Bonham. Release albums everyone and then and do some short tours, doing new stuff, Zep, Montrose, solo, and the VH and Chickenfoot songs Page can handle.

That way, the 2 greatest bands on Earth can kinda retire together, hopefully in many more years.

(Still praying for a Van Hagar reunion though.......)
