My latest theory is; I think Ed had already "Sharked " his white Destroyer, before recording the first album, so he got Gene Simmons to "borrow" Paul Stanley's white Destroyer, because it wasn't missing that precious tone generating chunk.
(The first time I saw Kiss on Don Kircshner's Rock Concert, Stanley was playing a white Destroyer)
So I think what we're seeing here is Stanley's Destroyer, much like we see Holmes' Destroyer in the WACF studio shoot.

    Just a theory
    Please disregard this theory.
I don't know what got into me.
I have since discovered that Paul Stanley was actually using a genuine Gibson Explorer at the time, not an Ibanez copy.
    My bad.
(And from the photo, we can clearly see from the back, and 30 feet away, that is definitely not a Gibson Explorer )

In fact, on several occasions, Edward has stated that he used the white Ibanez Destroyer when they recorded the first album, and then "Shark'd" it before the tour, but as always, we can take that for what it's worth.

And in my case, as clearly demonstrated, if you play guitar for too many years, and spend too much time analyzing BS on forums, you will go mad....HAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHa

One note...I confirmed with Greg Renoff (who confirmed with Ted and Donn) that the picture that Donn Landee took from Sunset Sound, Studio 1, is indeed from the sessions for the actual album-NOT the demo sessions which were all done in Studio 1.

The only parts of the album that were recorded in Studio 1 using the Ibanez Destroyer at the time this picture was taken were all the tracks done for “Jamie’s Cryin’”...ergo, the overwhelming likelihood is that this is a picture of Mike, Ed and Al recording “Jamie’s Cryin’”.

Just wanted to post this fairly good resolution color photo of the band with Eddie using his Destroyer in it's stock amber finish...it has been shared before, but I thought I would include it here to keep this thread as comprehensive as I can...

Garbeaj, do we know what year this photo is from? I’ve only ever seen him playing the guitar once it was painted white.

Paul Stanley did have an Ibanez Destroyer but it was not painted white. He also changed both pickups to open coil DiMarzios and put a “harmonica” bridge on it sometime before early 1976. But he did also have the Explorer

This would be fall of 1975. There are a bunch of great black and white photos of Eddie with the Destroyer in Greg Renoff’s excellent book ‘Van Halen Rising’. There is at least one other color photo of the band during this period when the Destroyer had it’s stock finish...’The Tahitian Room’ is the venue. The Ibanez Destroyer was at NAMM in 1975 and Eddie’s Destroyer and Chris Holmes’ Destroyer were both purchased at The Sound Chamber music and were among the very first to hit the U.S. from Japan in that year.

I have to be honest Chris Holmes’ red Destroyer is cooler-looking than Ed’s in natural or white. Even all beat up it has a really nice look to it.

Oh yes, and now that you can get high quality replica parts it’s easy to build one...
