    Can the Strypes save rockíníroll?

The Irish quartet are winning over music's grandees by going back to the blues

The pantheon of rock is littered with musicians who took a little too readily to the distractions that come with life on the road. It's a lesson that the Strypes, four Irish teenagers channelling the rhythm and blues of Dr Feelgood mixed with Sixties-era Rolling Stones, have taken to heart. "The people who are held up as legendary for drink and drugs, 99 per cent of them are dead," points out bassist Pete O'Hanlon.

Proving that clean living needn't diminish legitimacy, this summer saw the band move from Dublin pubs to the John Peel Stage for their first billing at Glastonbury. But the Stones obsessives are still distraught at missing the band's headline show. "We had an acoustic set right after their performance," recalls guitarist Josh McClorey. "We were 80 feet away, and we could hear 'Jumpin' Jack Flash'. We tried to sneak around but security said: 'Nah, you're not getting past.'"

More fool that guard. The Strypes' profile has ballooned of late, after an invitation to join Arctic Monkeys on tour where, if their previous shows are anything to go by, things could get rowdy. At a recent gig, two fans invaded the stage and dragged McClorey into the crowd: "One of the pair fell off the stage with me, and his trousers fell down."

That live reputation has won them some famous fans. Dave Grohl has labelled them "unbelievable", Noel Gallagher goes to their shows, and Sir Elton John has signed them to his management company. "Elton turned up unannounced at this gig we played in Brighton," says McClorey. "There were 150 people in a 70-person attic. There was no space, so we had to sit him up in the DJ box."

The Strypes still enjoy the grimy clubs, but they're equally familiar with more urbane audiences. In June they played David Furnish's London Collections: Men opening party, to a crowd that included Tommy Hilfiger and David Gandy. So how do models compare to screaming teenagers? "It's the same reaction. They all get sweaty and take their clothes off," says O'Hanlon, laughing. "You finish a song, and think: 'Oh, David Gandy, put your clothes back on.'"

Hey, 47...these guys are pretty friggin' good! Rock energy, baby: that's what they're bringin' to the fight. I'm digging' the old-school vibe.

Picked up the debut album from these guys after seeing them on Letterman and catching all the buzz in this thread.

Pretty solid effort for a debut, and i'll be anxious to see where they go next.

Cool to hear this type of music from such a young band.
The Edge... there is no honest way to explain it because the only people who really know where it is are the ones who have gone over.

This next part could really confuse things. Let's stay focused. #asis

The Strypes star suffers with tendinitis

Strypes drummer Evan Walsh has been diagnosed with tendinitis in his right hand.

The teenage star been diagnosed with tendinitis after a big knot appeared in his right hand after dislocating a finger during a gig in Canada earlier this year.

The Cavan quartet are fast becoming one of rock's next big things, which means Walsh will have to suffer through his pain so that they can perform at all their forthcoming gigs.

Speaking to Rolling Stone magazine Walsh said: "We managed (to play) for another 40 minutes. I played even faster (than usual) to get done, because of the pain."
