So he blew the lyrics on China Town?So what?
Dance the Night away continues to have a melody that
dances away from Dave but overall he was good.
It sounds like here and there he can't hear himself at times.
Actually he was very good on some of the songs.
A pretty decent Running With the Devil.

Some of the videos sound better than others as well.
It's obvious that even if he sang like in 1977 some people would still say "Well he didn't do it exactly like the record".Since apparently he was such a lousy singer even back then.
Well 17 million sold worldwide on VH 1 say otherwise.
Those songs wouldn't exist without him.Or has everyone forgotten that?

Obviously they cut the seating down for the show and
I have to say the crowd there knows their VH.Probably 20,000?
Van Halen is on fire and Dave is doing pretty good. That's all that counts.
    Get them in the studio!

Are there any plans for new Van Halen recorded material?

Yes. I was just on the phone with the fellas … We are going to be getting together, not this month, at the end of June to start preparing for some new recording and some new songs, but we’re touring a little bit this year. That’s kind of a surprise. We’re in Australia, we’re doing a Japan tour for a couple of weeks, and we’re doing some American stuff.

he's oblivious on the lyrics for that song, he didn't just blow them. i love dave and what he doesn in this band and his history, but calling it like i see it. i agree he does sound better this time out. and yes the consistency of the videos streaming in from this concert vary dramatically. i said last year i thought he had trouble hearing himself up there. they are playing with a TON of stage volume. he's making an effort and that's what matters to me. he's slowed his movements down, he's chewing gum to keep the throat lubricated, and he's pacing the songs

he is doing much better. most of the songs he is at least trying to sing them in the right pitch and the way they were first done. volume is not a problem. everyone except EVH has in ear monitors and the stage volume is not what you think. EVH's post volumes are only on 3.

I'm not so sure about Ed's master volume on his heads being at 3. When I saw them twice last year from the first few rows there seemed to be a lot of stage volume, and I was trying to differentiate between the PA and the stage sources. I've played live with no monitors or a poor monitor mix with a lot of stage volume to get over a loud drummer and know what it's like when you can't hear yourself on stage. You can lose your point of reference and you really have to focus to stay in time. Ed has said a number of times that he reacts to hearing himself play loudly at live shows. With all of those heads and speaker cabs behind him, he's only using three of the lower cabs. Doesn't use the upper cabs in at least a small attempt to protect his hearing. His actual heads are offstage in a rack and the ones that are behind him are for show only, even though they are powered on. Unless you have a source that says the heads in his offstage rack are set to a master volume of 3, I'd say they are much louder. There were some pics floating around of his offstage rack, but I don't recall what era they were from or what the master volumes were set to.

I will agree that the whole thing of hearing Dave live vs. on Youtube is odd. When I saw them, I thought Dave was doing very well, even on "Dance the Night Away", but on the Youtube videos he sounded like every other time he's sung it over the past year. Maybe it has something to do with the way people hear a live mix, but it's still weird.

Having said that, I don't think he was abysmal. He was much closer to '07/'08 DLR, although he definitely had some rough spots. "Outta Space" suits his voice so much better, it's insane that they're not playing that instead of "China Town".

Absolutely, it sounded completely different on the floor where I was. I did take a stroll (bathroom break) on Panama... and got an idea of the difference from the back.. yeah quite different... although the light show was cooler

then walking back to my seat... we were right in front of the left PA speakers about 20 rows back.. and right in front of that left video screen. Sounded great there. ('',)b

And (China Town aside) Dave WAS kicking ass. No bout a doubt it.

    Cheers,
