Anniversary of Van Halen’s Oakland, 1981 Shows: Highest Quality Footage Unearthed!

32 years ago today, Van Halen kicked off a multi-show run at the Oakland Coliseum as part of their Fair Warning tour. From July 11-13th, 1981, the band performed three consecutive nights in front of sold out crowds of 11,300 people each night. The Oakland ’81 shows have become legendary, thanks to the band deciding to preserve some of it to film.The footage was edited into three videos. which aired on MTV as promos for the Fair Warning album. These videos have been floating around on the internet and bootleg tapes and DVDs for ages, and are some of the most cherished footage that fans have.

Video Upgrade! To celebrate the anniversary of this historic occasion, the Van Halen News Desk is unveiling the highest quality footage that has ever surfaced of these three videos. Over the next three days, we will release one video each day. Today we have featured “Hear About It Later”. Wednesday and Thursday will see the release of “So This Is Love?” and “Unchained”, respectively. (Embedded right here, in this article). The new videos have superior picture and sound than previously circulated. (Note to the serious VH bootleg junkies- this isn’t simply cleaned up or enhanced, it’s from a better source than ever before).

I don't see much of an improvement on the video, actually. Maybe it's just my eyes.

The standout hear is the audio. Al's drums actually have a punch to them; before I thought everything sounded really muddy. It's quite clearer. And that's awesome.

I have been a bit out of the VHTrading.com loop the past year or so, kind of lost interest. Haven't talked to Wes or many of your other Arizona friends from VHT.

Who or what is the new (better) source of these "Upgrades". Or is that "confidential"?
