I love all six albums with Dave, but have never quite warmed up to the full FAIR WARNING experience as much as the other five. And I just can't understand why. I love UNCHAINED, HEAR ABOUT IT LATER and SO THIS IS LOVE. But I prefer the VOODOO QUEEN demo to the redone MEAN STREET (which is still great), and don't really see the appeal in DIRTY MOVIES or ONE FOOT OUT THE DOOR.

What I want is fans of this album to explain why this album really does something for them (I know it's a fan favorite), and maybe I'll find something in it or be able to appreaciate it more. Or, non-fans of it could tell me why they don't like it.

Anyone?

I don't know, just seems to be one of the "perfect" VH albums, minus the last two throw away tracks. Eddie's tone was never better, Dave's bravado was in full force, and the musicianship is stellar. To me, that album combines all of the great elements of VH, power, arrogance, fun, and great riffs. Such a mean album, I just love it.

Well, you got "Mean Street", awesome, crunchy tune. "Dirty Movies" is awesome, the drums, guitars - all that. "Sinners Swing" gets 'em going every time. "Hear About It Later" - soaring guitar work, just an amazing song. "Unchained" - could've been a hit if the Brothers Warner had seen fit. "Push Comes To Shove" has a good groove, "So This Is Love" is a nice poppy song. "Saturday Afternoon In The Park" sounds like some weird porno music. "One Foot Out The Door" is a great album ender, thought the solo at the end could've been longer.

My favorite Roth-era album. Unchained, Sinner's Swing, Mean Street, So This Is Love?, Hear About It Later. Classic songs.

Fair Warning isn't necessarily my favorite Van Halen album, though it certainly is always near the top. For me, Dave really shines on this record. Great lyrics as usual, but a delivery and an attitude that's free of the clownish, toastmaster general persona that he would soon adopt. It's not that Dave sounds angry (which is how FW tends to be described), he just sounds uncompromising, strong, bold, and intense. Just talking about sheer vocal strength, Dave has never reached this height again.

"Fair Warning" is pure class (again maybe with exception to the last two.) "Mean Streets" has a great groove and Ed's guitar is razor-sharp. Check out the intro noodling on "Dirty Movies", though, cool as f**k. "So this is love?" = probably my all-time favourite VH song.
And I haven't even mentioned "Unchained" yet.
It hasn't been off my CD player for nearly two weeks.

Once again, remember getting it when it first came out and just going crazy !! And, I still do.

There is not one song I dont like.

I will also add that "One Foot Out the Door" is killer. The solo could have been longer at the end, the song just rocks. I dont believe they have ever played this live. "Sunday AFternoon in the Park" has been played off and on, but not this song.

Nobody has mentioned either, that the guitar sound that Ed achieved on this release is unmatched.

Another reason that Van Halen is my favorite band !!

I don't know how well I can describe this, but one of the things that I really enjoy about this album is that the bass sounds much fuller than on the previous three. It just seems to play a bigger role in the sound of the songs on Fair Warning. Songs like "Mean Street" and "Push Comes To Shove" come to mind as I'm thinking about this. I love the part in "Mean Street" after Ed finishes his guitar entry and Mikey's bass kicks in.

Everytime I listen to it, I hear something new that I didn't hear or notice before. It's just one of the best albums I've ever heard. Like Brett said, it combines everything that makes VH great.

Fair Warning is one of my favourite albums...
“And what we have at our fingertips is arguably one of the greatest high tenor voices ever – that was in Michael Anthony. In our tiny little corner of the universe, that voice is as identifiable as the high voice in Earth, Wind & Fire, as identifiable as the high voice in the Beach Boys. Van Halen is an indelicate house blend of both – that’s intentionally. So I would always look forward to that reunion.” - David Lee Roth

It was the era of my life in which the album came out. I was sixteen, just got my first car...plus the Fair Warning tour was my first VH (and first hard rock) concert experience!

All that aside, the album kicks ass. Even if it is all of about 33 minutes in length, the tunes just have a way of creating a mood.

"Unchained" is Van Halen to the core. No song, (IMO) is more VH than that cut.

Ed dabbles w/ the keyboards on "Sunday Afternoon In The Park"...the production is cool. Overall, it stands as a muscial step forward...it is so different from the first three albums (and WAY different than the follow-up Diver Down, perhaps the low-point in VH creativity.)

I also recall that the solo on "Push Comes To Shove" was one of the most difficult for Edward to get right...it took him several attempts. I am no guitarist, but listen to the tune! It just sounds hard to play.

And another thing: MTV was born a few months after the release of Fair Warning. "Sinner's Swing" and "Unchained" got some heavy play. (oh ya: I was at the "brand new Oakland scarf" gig. They played three nights at the Oakland Coliseum arena..I was there for two!

Fair Warning is a great album and a sonic masterpiece. Just compare the tone on FW to that of VHIII. Oh, and another thing. The songs on FW were a little bit better than those on VHIII. LOL!!!
