Sorry going to disagree on Jump being hair metal. It was groundbreaking for a "heavy metal" band to use synth's more attuned to New Wave. Keys or piano wasn't added to the "hair" metal bandwagon until a year later with Home Sweet Home. This song allowed however bands to use keys. Thinking it was hair metal is like saying Tom Sawyer is hair metal. Hard rock band incorporating keys? Check. Hard rock bands most popular song even decades later? Check. Non-traditional timing in the song? Check. Both recorded prior to the advent of hair metal? Check.

I know from experience how difficult it is to keep the guitar solo section together. Hard enough to do the solo but you need to play against the f'ed up timing by bass, drums and keys.

I agree. Tattoo is a good song, not great. The lyrics are really good (ADKOT has Dave's best in his career as a whole I think), guitar crunch and solo (s) are good too. People have something against the song, almost like it'a personal thing (the band's fuck you to them almost). I don't get it.

And regarding Jump, it's as someone said the "perfectly crafted pop song". (and not in a bad way at all). My wife (foreigner) knows the melody and has heard it before just did not know until recently that it's Van Halen. When I explained what the lyrics mean (uplifting), she agreed and loves it even more now

I never got into Tattoo; I bought it the morning it was released on ITunes and I was a little disappointed.

I just don't think it's that good of a song especially after the long layoff. I thought VH would be firing on all cylinders, but this song undercut that line of thinking. there are a few decent tunes on ADKOT but it was not what I was expecting.

Nature's intent is neither food, nor drink, nor clothing, nor comfort, nor anything else in which God is left out.

Yeah, there could've been some faster-paced songs to release as the first one.

Many people I knew said they thought Tattoo sounded more like Dave solo because he was doing all the backup vox.

However, from a Monday Morning Quarterback perspective, You And Your Blues, China Town, & As Is should have been singles; not because of their poppyness ala Interscope's thoughts on Tattoo, but because You & Your Blues was VH evolution, China Town was the Virtuosity everyone expects, and AS IS is a crazy shuffle with a catchy chorus and a heavy intro. (To be fair As IS & HBSD might be interchangeable in this realm)

I think Tattoo, She's the Woman, Beats Workin, Outta Space, & Big River, while all excellent - faced scrutiny due to internet leaks of OG demos.

Blood & Fire, Bullethead & HBSW have never had full band demo releases, just a few instrumentals and a live cut - putting them in different territory.

AS IS itself, is the original Voodoo Queen chorus and that bad boogie from NAMM & 2&1/2 Men: so I dunno what that constitutes.

My experience on that 1st day was as soon as I heard Ed's solo, I knew that all was good in the world again

Tattoo has its moments. The bass line (Uncle Danny has a coal tattoo) immediately after the guitar solo is pretty tasty.

I view ADKOT as a gift. After 2004, I never would have dreamed they would have been able to pull it off. I don’t listen to it near as much as the 6-pack but it’s got plenty of great moments.
