While Phil Collen was playing in pre-Def Leppard group Girl, he crossed paths with Eddie Van Halen – who himself had been enjoying the creative boost that came with added firepower from his pickups.

And, as it turned out, the now sadly departed American virtuoso had some pearls of wisdom to share on the matter…

“When I first met Eddie, it was on Van Halen’s first British headline tour at the Rainbow in Finsbury Park, London,” continues Collen.

“He was so humble, considering he was such a monster player. We were talking about guitars and I had this Strat that my mum had gotten me for my 21st birthday.

It was the main guitar I used later on the Hysteria stuff – whenever you hear anything on that record, it’s probably that.

“When I told him I had this beautiful Strat that I loved, he actually said, ‘You know, you won’t be happy until you’ve taken that pickup out and carved out space for a humbucker!’

And I thought, ‘Fuck!’ but I did it because Eddie told me to do it (laughs)! We put a DiMarzio in there and yeah, whenever you hear Animal or any of those tracks on the radio, that’s what you’re hearing!”

Did you ever cross paths with Eddie again?

“Only one more time, sadly. I have to say he was the most important rock player after Jimi Hendrix, who was the first real guitarist.

Everyone at the time had this sound in their head but they couldn’t really do it. Jimi could, and very naturally. I still don’t think anyone’s come close to Hendrix ever since.

“But Eddie has to come next, he changed guitar in a similar way.

It was the purity of his style. Sure, the shredding was great and the tapping was unique – I’d never heard it before – but the vibrato was truly amazing.

He could make his guitar sing. It was all very natural. The main difference between them was that Hendrix was a singer and that meant he had a different approach to it.”
I get what Phil is saying, but for me, and I am certainly biased with my opinion, I still think Eddie is the best. He simply changed what people thought the guitar could do. Hendrix is amazing. I own just about everything he put out -- I'm a fan. But he sill played the guitar in a conventional way. Yes, I know he restrung a righty to play as a lefty. Before Eddie, most people were still like, "First, get a Strat or a Les Paul and a Marshall. Ok, so you strum with this hand and make the chords and notes with the other hand. Not Eddie. He played his guitar like a piano. He made it sound like there were 2 guitarists in the band. Eddie had both the blues feel, and the classical feel.

Its been over 40 years since Eddie tossed the rule book and wrote his own. No one has even come close to doing that again.

Yep. And the list of guys who changed the way guitars were constructed and designed by the industry is a short list as well. Ed is on that list.

Hendrix was incredible but the Rolling Stone writers of the world have really inflated his legacy quite a bit.

Would it be too much to have a MWM appreciation thread? It has to be in my top ten Van Halen, easily. To me, it could have potentially represented an evolution in the VH sound, much like Eruption or Jump (but sadly was not meant to be)

MWM is a criminally under appreciated song. The pre-chorus into chorus moments with the backing harmony vocals (Do You Believe) and Dave's vocal style on the Don't Ya Trust Me's still produce goose bumps for me.

I’ve said here a few times that WACF is VH’s most complete album. It was the album where the band graduated from being a summer party band to being close to the same level as, say, a Zeppelin.

That album literally has it all.

Having said all that....Me Wise Magic, to me, is Van Halen’s shining moment. After all the turmoil. The drama. The infighting. The hiatuses.

And I’ve also said this before and I’ll say it again....

It was Ed, Al, Dave and Mike saying....

”You wanna know what Van Halen is?....You wanna know that we still have it?.............Listen to this....”

That song, to me, will always be literal perfection.

Listening to the instrumental of MWM, I hear some hints of Without You. I think both those songs are phenomenal instrumentally. I also think MWM and Without You are Ed's entrance into the buzzsaw sound. For me, Dave's vocals are the weak spot. He starts off like he just woke up and took a drag off a cigarette then somebody grabs his nuts.

The whole band is terrific on MWM. It was gratifying to finally have Dave back where he shouldve always been, and his lyrics were as clever as ever.

Eddie is one of the rare ones who changed guitar playing but was instrumental in guitar construction.

Not sure if this has been posted before - a video of Van Halen backstage antics set to CGTSNM. Haven't seen any of this before. Also, a nifty redo of the OU812 cover with Dave in Sammy's place comes at the very end.

Yes, Bad Women aka Peace of Mind... it's often listed as both...
