We know for sure that Al and Ed were. The Al classical guitar story and the Ed sax story were two eye openers from VH Rising.

I know maybe not at the beginning of his career, but by the time ADKOT was done, Dave would bring in complete songs. It of course would be much simpler than what ended up on record, but the key, chord structure, arrangement, tempo, melody, etc. would already be there, supported by a basic drum beat, etc.

He'd also bring in musicians to his Pasadena compound to record stuff all the time - I bet his demos sounded pretty good.

Greg Bissonette is still a go to help sort song arrangements in the basement. Dave is a real musician but really comes at from another era totally, he is an old soul musically and spiritually. He plucks on guitar, plays piano like a jazz player, harmonica like a southern baptist and loves funk dance music. It seems to have no match for the brothers musical POV but add immigrant culture, and a work aholic perfectionist ethos they shared somehow they squeezed those opposite views into 1 common sound that is pretty special. A lot of eggs broken in that omelet but a hell of a meal.

I think sound-wise, a lot of credit goes to Ted Templeman as well. The VH vocals (both lead and background), on the demos, are nowhere at the level they are on the records. Ted was a singer himself, was Californian, and was a great fit to take them to the next level.
