And the telephone call comes, and it’s the singer and he’s frantic. If the guy’s slamming the door when that word pops up, just pop in the sound of the door. You can go down to editing. They probably have 20 different doors for you. They’re in the Yellow Pages.” And that’s exactly what happened."

Makes sense. Before Sammy joined VH, there was really no reason for Dave and Sam not to get along.

It was on this day in 1988 when Van Halen released their 8th studio album OU812, the second to feature vocalist Sammy Hagar (after 5150).

Despite the album's title (a dig towards David Lee Roth's Eat Em And Smile) the band continued to prove they were just as viable as they were before, combining hard rock and pop sensibilities on singles "When It's Love" and "Finish What Ya Started," to the string-bending showcases "A.F.U. (Naturally Wired)" and "Cabo Wabo" and even an uncharacteristic cover (of Little Feat's "A Apolitical Blues"), Eddie, Alex, Michael, and Sammy play with abandon and a palpable sense of fun.

I love OU812. This is another VH record that was a strong producer away from being a classic. When It's Love and Mine All Mine are my two favorite songs and they are part of a strong core of songs, which also include AFU (Naturally Wired), Cabo Wabo, Feels So Good, and Finish What Ya Started. The music for SOI, Black and Blue, and Sucker in a Three Piece is stellar, but Sam's lyrics were a letdown on those tunes. I even think Mick Jones would have gotten Sam to tighten up and clean up some of those lyrics. Still, it was a great album and I loved seeing them on the Monsters of Rock and OU812 tours.

Feels So Good is a great song. Not sure if Ed is using a real Hammond, but it's got that "Boston" sound for sure...

I remember when I first went to the store and looked at the song titles, I was like "Oh wow! Van Halen is doing a Chuck Mangione cover, awesome!"

The Sax player Chris Vadala was from my hometown so that was a pretty big deal back in the day!
