My first VH concert(s) were the two nights in St. Louis in 2004. The crowd was amped both nights but VH--specifically Ed--were not good. Ed was all over the place. Of course everyone still had a good time, but as a guitarist and someone familiar with VH boots, I knew Eddie was a shell of himself up there (and looked the part, too).

It really was quite a bummer in retrospect, but I still remember being in row 11 and just being on cloud nine for pretty much all of the first night. My other vivid memory was this guy sitting right in front of me and my brother on night two when we were in the lower bowl. At one point, this guy takes off his shirt and starts waving it around like a rally towel. To each their own and I appreciate his enthusiasm, but this guy smelled like he worked outside all day without a shower and was wafting it around to everyone in the section, lol.

At a Motley Crue + Poison and New York Dolls concert, a guy next to me smelled SO bad, I gag’d throughout the entire show. Almost ruined the whole show for me, it was that bad...and it was more than just b-o.

I’d rather have someone taller than me standing in front than a stinky person at a concert.

Some scumbag fucker farted at one of The Circle shows I saw in Cleveland/Northfield. My girlfriend and I were pissed. And it definitely wasn't one that snuck out--that piece a shit pushed. At least it was only 5-7 minutes.

The worst is when someone does that on a plane. I mean, look, I get it, it's a long flight and the changing air pressure and all that, but come on man. Have some respect for your fellow travelers.

Got to sit next to an older Indian couple who didn’t believe in deodorant...on flight delayed on the tarmac in Atlanta, the day of the Olympic opening ceremonies. At that time when a flight sat on the tarmac, they powered down, no air conditioning. Packed flight too. We sat for roughly an hour...felt like a lifetime.

Ugh. I know some of it is a culture thing, but how can the spouses not talk to each other beforehand and be like "honey, you stink and I can't next to that smell for a whole flight. Care to wash up before we go?" If it was one person sometimes people just don't realize they smell bad, but with two that seems almost impossible.

My old apartment complex had a nice little gym and they'd come in deodorant-less reeking of B.O. and curry. After the first couple times, when they came in my ex and I would leave immediately. Had to.

Sometimes, however, I wasn't in the mood to work out and actually appreciated it though.

I was at the first show. Sad to see Eddie like that and thankful he was able to kick that shit and healthy looking and playing great once again.

The guy next to me looked like he was gonna have a stroke while Eddie played his solo. Maybe it was a good thing for him Eddie wasn't at his best at that time or that guy next to me might have fell out.

Weird as this sounds - 2004/2007/early 2008 were the eras we got to witness Edward Van “and now for something completely different” Halen.

I’m very thankful he cleaned up but in a weird way, that performance uncertainty was interesting to say the least - but not worth the $$$ of valued admission, just significant like how he would let loose some nights in the 70’s and 80’s.

Yeah it was weird how some nights were better than others and people would come away saying Ed played great on certain nights. You really didn't know what to expect. By 2008 though he finally turned a corner and delivered consistent performances night in and night out. His playing actually got better all the way up until the end, which was amazing. Seeing that redemption story is almost part of his legend to me. He went from untouchable, to human and a shell of his former self, back to untouchable by the end.
