I kind of scratch my head at the vinyl fad that's going on, for a couple of reasons.
One is, it simply does not sound as good as a high-quality digital track.

It might be more "familiar" to those of us that grew up listening to music that way, so we perceive it's better....but it's not. At least in clarity and sound quality/accuracy.
If you compare it to a crappy MP3 to a nice turntable and a good amp/speakers, then yeah....but that's not apples to apples.

Second, I LOL at these younger folks who have gotten into vinyl, but buy these crappy 'all in one' record players with built-in speakers. If you ARE going to listen to vinyl, at least get a good turntable and a decent system to play it through.
I asked a ref if he could give me a technical foul for thinking bad things about him. He said, of course not. I said, well, I think you stink. And he gave me a technical. You can't trust em. -

Vinyl made up 62% of all music sold last year. So to say it's a fad would be wrong.

If Spotify sounds better than a record, you probably have a crummy setup.

Edit: Yes, I meant physical media. But still, to say that's a fad is weird.

I kind of view vinyl like this: If I had the choice between a 1969 Mustang Cobra Jet or a late model Mustang Cobra--give me the '69. Its just more interesting to me. Yeah the newer one handles better, has more features, is safer, and likely faster, but the there's just something about the '69 model. The styling, the quirks, the old seats, there's no computer, its all mechanical, etc.

To be honest, when executed correctly, I think the Compact Disc format sounds better than a vinyl record. I really think it comes down to how the original tapes were mixed. A lot of new vinyl records or reissues these days use the CD master anyway. But that's another can of worms.

Vinyl records are just more interesting to me. The packaging is cooler, and it requires me to pay more attention because I can't easily skip to a song. I'm just saying, if I'm at home and want to really enjoy some music, I'll put on the vinyl record. I've got my entire music library on a USB stick in my car.

But just like Dave vs Sammy, vinyl vs digital will rage on forever. Do whatever you like.

Well that's great, but that's not remotely what I said. (And I have a great system to listen to stuff on).

Of course streaming doesn't sound as good. I said high quality audio files. They sound far better than vinyl. I remember when CDs came out, everybody was getting CDs from their buddies and making tape from them, because they sounded better than the actual cassette of the album that you could buy in the store.

That hasn't changed just because files can be stored on the hard drive now. If you have full quality digital files, that's the best the music can possibly sound.

The Mustang analogy is pretty good. An old Mustang or Camaro is way cooler than any car that you could buy today, but the car that you can buy today with a 6 cylinder in it would blow either of those away in speed. Hell, even pickup trucks in some cases will outrun a lot of the old muscle cars now. So I get using vinyl for that purpose.

But the fact of the matter is, it's just more of a case that it is a sound that we older folks were used to in our youth and it is familiar.

It depends on your setup. CD's sound clearer to me but I just have an Audio Technica record player, Sony CD player, Pioneer receiver and Sony speakers. Nothing fancy just standard equipment. I have bluetooth capability though with my receiver.

If you own a Mcintosh amp and record player than Vinyl should sound better on the really high end audiophile gear.

I really don't get the negativity from people over CD's these days though. I still love them and collect them and they are dirt cheap and sound amazing.

The sound of streaming sucks it's compressed most of the time. I need my audio lossless.

The kind of deals I find used on CD's though keep on streaming people, thankyou.

    Lightbulb

I don't think i've heard a record since 1990, but I remember I didn't like them that much. I hate how records skip and get scratched easily.

They are great for artwork since they are huge, but I have many rock CD's, so I would be drowning in them if they were all on Vinyl.

CD's are newer tech and sound great to me.

Yes, I agree. It does skip if the record is scratched up and they need to be handled with care. That's why the Vinyl resurgence is amusing because the audience buying them is likely for the cool factor of it all. Most of the people buying them will likely scratch them, damage them and will have to rebuy them so it's a win win for the record labels. They also take up more space than CD's and are more fragile. They make more money off of Vinyl because CD's if put back in case last ages while records handled poorly will have to be replaced within months to a year. I am very careful with Vinyl I never touch the playing sides but most consumers likely treat them poorly and likely are stunned that it's scratched up and skipping, lol. This is nothing new though before CD's people were fucking records up and rebuying.
